Previous model VW Karmann Ghia Type 14
successor VW Scirocco II

The VW Scirocco I is on the platform of the VW Golf I built sport coupe . He replaced the Karmann Ghia in February 1974 . The Scirocco came onto the market before the Golf. Together with the Golf, Passat and Polo , the Scirocco led VW out of the threatening sales crisis as part of the model offensive with water-cooled front-wheel drive models.

In April 1981 it was replaced by the Scirocco II .

VW Scirocco GLI

At the end of the 1960s, a successor to the Karmann Ghia Coupé, which had been in production since 1955, was considered at the Volkswagen factory . In the autumn of 1971, VW product planning decided  to position an attractively priced coupé on the market based on the EA 337 development order - the first Golf . Under the acronym EA 398, Karmann received the order in Osnabrück to develop the later Scirocco. The body shape was designed by Giorgio Giugiaro .

This came on the market in spring 1974. Three engines, four equipment variants and ten exterior colors were available: engines with 1100 cm³ and 37 kW (50 PS) as well as 1500 cm³ and 51 or 63 kW (70 or 85 PS) displacement and the equipment variants N (basic model), L, S and TS, which was called GT from August 1976, but had the same equipment.

The transversely installed in- line four-cylinder engine had an overhead camshaft and either bucket tappets ( EA827 ) or rocker arms (up to 1300 cm³). The camshaft was driven with a toothed belt. The four-speed transmission was in a common housing with the differential . The front wheels (with rack and pinion steering ) were guided on MacPherson struts with lower triangular wishbones , a twist beam axle was installed at the rear . Disc brakes were used at the front and drum brakes at the rear .

Up to August 1975 all Scirocco were equipped with two front wipers; after that the wagons only had the large one-arm wiper.

In June 1976 the Scirocco GTI was expanded to include an engine enlarged to 1,600 cc with mechanical K-Jetronic gasoline injection from Bosch. Because of the higher output of 81 kW (110 PS), the water cooler , suspension and shock absorbers had to be modified and additional stabilizers , an oil cooler , internally ventilated disc brakes at the front, wider rims and tires with a higher speed index were required. This K-Jetronic injection engine (without separate oil cooler) was first used in 1975 in the Audi 80 GTE .

After the factory holidays , the more comfortably equipped Scirocco GLI followed in August 1976, while the VW Golf GTI with the same engine could only be delivered in sufficient numbers from spring 1977 due to delivery bottlenecks at K-Jetronic.

Facelift

In August 1977, both the chassis and the appearance were revised for the 1978 model year. The bumpers, now made of black plastic, were drawn around the corners, the enlarged front indicators were easier to see from the side, the B-pillars were colored black and the radiator grille was given a decorative frame. The suspension of the strut has been strengthened and the steering and engine mountings have been improved. The engine range now comprised the 37 kW, 51 kW and 81 kW engines. Subsequently, a regular model update was carried out, both in the interior and the technical level (engines with 1.3 / 1.6 liter displacement, five-speed gearbox or 4 + E , electronic ignition systems ).

The CL and SL special models followed in the fall of 1980. From February 1974 to March 1981, a total of 504,153 copies of the first Scirocco rolled off the production line at Karmann in Osnabrück. Production ended with the current chassis number 27500 of the model year 1981.

In April 1981, a single vehicle was produced for the museum, which already received the new black nameplate and bears the serial number 27501. Internally, this vehicle was run with number 50,000 and production was finally completed.

Sales development

  • After a press presentation in Wolfsburg, the VW Scirocco was exhibited at the Geneva Motor Show in March 1974 . From mid-April 1974 four different advertising motifs appeared under the slogan “Scirocco. A sports coupé at its best ”in the press. It was two months ahead of the VW Golf I, as it was only presented to the public in June 1974. In the first year of sales, 24,555 Sciroccos were sold, followed by 58,942 in 1975 - 6,000 more than planned. In 1977 and 1978, over 87,000 cars were bought each year; a number that was later never reached again.
  • In Great Britain , where the Scirocco was rarely found due to high sales prices in the 1970s, it was given the designation Scirocco MkI (Mark One). The special model "Storm" was comparable to the GTI model "limited edition" with leather upholstery and is now a coveted collector's item there.

Variants and special models

Scirocco I (1974 to 1981)
  • Scirocco (N) - basic model with 1.1 / 1.3 liter engine
  • Scirocco L / GL (better equipment)
  • Scirocco S / LS (both with 70/75 HP engine)
  • Scirocco TS (85 PS, only until July 1976)
  • Scirocco GT (from August 1976)
  • Scirocco GLi / GTi (110 HP engine)
  • Scirocco CL (special model)
  • Scirocco SL (special model)
  • Scirocco Turbo (test vehicle; see below)

The letters “L”, “T”, “GL” and “GT” relate to the equipment, “S” and “i” to the engine output, with the “i” referring to the 81 kW / 110 PS engine with K-Jetronic petrol injection.

The L equipment included, among other things: silver-colored instrument insert (instead of black), adjustable instrument lighting, trip meter, cigar lighter, make-up mirror in the passenger sun visor, lighting of the ashtray and heating lever, foamed steering wheel, wiper interval switch, shelves on the center tunnel and on the passenger side , Carpeting, luggage compartment light, lockable fuel filler cap.

The GL / GLi and GT / GTi models were externally recognizable by the trim strips on the belt line, the front spoiler and the halogen H1 double headlights as well as the nameplate on the tailgate (basic and L models had broadband headlights - without as standard H4 halogen light). Furthermore: double-tone horn, sports steering wheel, rev counter, center console with clock and oil temperature display, GL / GLi were equipped as standard with tinted windows, carpet inlays in the door panels and height-adjustable front seats with integrated or separate headrests and with special seat covers in ("Genuacord") or in synthetic leather. GT / GTi had front seats with separate headrests in the “tartan” seat covers - or in simple synthetic leather.

In 1978 Volkswagen had planned a special series of the coupé with a turbocharger for export overseas. Its engine had the identifier EL and made 90 kW.

The first prototypes of the Scirocco special model were manufactured by Karmann (Osnabrück) in 1979, but there were serious technical problems during the first test runs and the car never went into series production, which was originally set at 2000. However, one model from the test series was not scrapped and is now privately owned.

Engines

The Scirocco was equipped exclusively with four-cylinder in - line engines.

  • 1.1 liter displacement, 37 kW / 50 PS
  • 1.3 liter displacement, 44 kW / 60 PS
  • 1.5 liter displacement, 51 kW / 70 PS
  • 1.5 liter displacement, 63 kW / 85 PS (Scirocco TS; until July 1975)
  • 1.6 liter displacement, 55 kW / 75 PS (from August 1975)
  • 1.6 liter displacement, 63 kW / 85 PS (Scirocco GT; from August 1975)
  • 1.6 liter displacement, 81 kW / 110 PS (Scirocco GTi or GLi; from July 1976)

Existence in Germany

The inventory of VW Scirocco I is listed according to manufacturer (HSN) and type code numbers (TSN) in Germany according to the Federal Motor Transport Authority . Types with less than 100 vehicles are not shown. Until 2007, the inventory included the number of vehicles registered as well as the number of temporary shutdowns. Since 2008, the inventory has only included "flowing traffic" including the seasonal license plates.

Modifications and tuning

Bieber convertible conversion based on the VW Scirocco I.

In a small edition of 52 pieces, Artz also offered the Scirocco I as a station wagon (Sciwago). Otherwise there are many conversions from the T-roof and gullwing to the pickup based on both Scirocco generations.

Even before production of the first VW Golf convertible started in 1979, there were some convertible variants of the Scirocco I. These were produced in small series, such as the Tempest from Wolfe Garage (Westerham, UK) or the Artz Speedster from the Nordstadt dealership in Hannover. However, these exotic cars were not successful in the market in view of the Golf Cabrio (known as the “strawberry basket” because of its roll bar).

As the tuning boom began in the late 1980s, the idea of a Scirocco convertible was taken up again. In the editorial of the 04/1989 issue of the Scirocco Zeitung , reference is made to the convertible conversions by the Zander Exclusiv Tuning company in Darmstadt and the Luley company. In the 02/1994 issue, the convertible conversion by the Koch Tuning company from Philippsburg was presented. Most Scirocco-I convertibles, however, are likely to have been built by the company on the basis of one of the conversion kits from Cabrio-Design Ostermann-Germer from Overath or Bieber Cabrio from Borken . Accordingly, there is neither reliable data on the number of Scirocco convertibles ever built, nor on how many have survived to this day.
