The VW XL1 was a small series produced by the German Volkswagen group of a one-liter car . They have been working on the concept since 2002 and started producing 200 copies in March 2014. Since 2002, various studies have been presented for a low-energy vehicle that can cope with prescribed driving cycles with an average consumption of one liter of fuel per 100  km .

The 390 kg vehicle had two seats arranged one behind the other. This resulted in a streamlined body 3.65 m long and 1.25 m wide with a C w value of 0.159. The frontal area was quite small due to the seats lying one behind the other. There were no exterior mirrors and rearview mirrors , cameras were used instead. Classic lighting has also been replaced by modern light-emitting diode technology. A motor serving as a cylinder - diesel - pump-nozzle - direct injection with about 6.3 kW / 8.5 hp at 4000 min -1 and 299 cc cubic capacity which enables a maximum speed of about 120 km / h. The concept was reminiscent of the Messerschmitt cabin scooter . Around 70 automotive suppliers were involved in the realization of the concept study with VW code name CC0, and they installed their systems in the vehicle on VW's own test site at Ehra-Lessien . Despite the lightweight construction of the mechanical components and minimal power consumption in the electrics / electronics, the CC0 was a safe and - given the circumstances - comfortable vehicle. Included were u. a. an ESP with integrated ABS , a driver's airbag , deformation elements in the front area, keyless entry / keyless go system for wing doors, 80 liter trunk and engine start-stop .

In an effective advertising test drive to a VW general meeting in April 2002, the then VW boss Ferdinand Piëch achieved an average consumption of 0.89 liters of diesel per 100 km at an average speed of around 72 km / h.

After Piëch, chairman of the supervisory board, VW CEO Martin Winterkorn also confirmed in 2007 that VW would build the one-liter car in series ; The year 2010 was planned. A first near-series version was presented in September 2009 at the Frankfurt IAA under the name L1 . Due to the reorientation towards a series product, the vehicle differed in many ways from the first concept. Among other things, the consumption was now given as 1.38 liters of diesel per 100 km (corresponding to 36 g / km CO 2 ) and the top speed as 160 km / h. The vehicle mass was 380 kg with a length of 3.81 m, a width of 1.20 m and a height of 1.14 m. The main propulsion hybrid of a two-cylinder - TDI diesel engine with 800 cc plus an electric motor . The diesel engine was located in the rear, the lithium-ion battery for the electric motor in the front of the vehicle. The output of 29 kW / 39 PS was transferred to the rear wheels by a 7-speed DSG . The acceleration from 0 to 100 km / h took place in 14.3 seconds in sport mode, the range was 720 km.

The XL1 is a plug-in hybrid with a lithium-ion battery that can be charged at the socket. With a full tank (10 l of diesel) and a lithium-ion battery charged in 90 minutes , the vehicle has a range of 550 km, of which around 35 km are covered electrically. This corresponds to a consumption of 1.82 l diesel / 100 km with a full battery and 1.94 l diesel / 100 km with a discharged battery.

In the XL1, in contrast to the previous models, the two seats are arranged side by side. The air resistance has thus increased again, the frontal area A is now 1.5 m 2 , the air resistance coefficient c w 0.186. The vehicle weighs 795 kg, whereby, according to VW, 21.3 percent of it consists of CFRP , including the monocoque (see picture of the passenger cell), 22.5 percent of light metal and 23.2 percent (184 kg) of steel. The remaining mass fractions are plastics, non-ferrous metals, natural fibers, operating materials and electronics.

Series production

VW Supervisory Board Chairman Piëch stated in January 2011 that Volkswagen wanted to produce the XL1 in large-scale production from 2013 onwards . In March 2012, Die Zeit reported that VW was definitely planning a small series for 2013 . In February 2013 it was announced that the model ready for series production would be presented at the Geneva Motor Show 2013 and that production of a small series of 100 to 1000 units would begin at Volkswagen Osnabrück ; the price range mentioned was 40,000 to 100,000 euros. The BMW i3 should become a major competitor .

Shortly afterwards, the production target was reduced to just 50 vehicles, and this small series should not be available in free trade, but only be leased. In March 2013 there was talk of 250 vehicles again. This number was mentioned again in a press report from September 2013 and the price was put at 111,000 euros.

200 copies of the XL1 have been built in Osnabrück since March 2014. The first XL1 was delivered to a customer on May 31, 2014. In 2016, production was stopped after the planned 200 pieces had been reached.
