The Volkswagen Jetta König is a lower middle class passenger car that was produced by FAW-Volkswagen for the People's Republic of China from May 1997 to March 2010 at the Changchun plant and, since 2008, also at the Chengdu plant. The model is a further development of the Jetta II .

Concept and technology

Front 1997-2002

The Jetta König was not just a further development, but was created as a hybrid between the Jetta II and the Passat B4 . The most striking feature of the update is the long and flat front section. Depending on the model version, the interior was either from the Corrado or the Passat B5 . The dimensions of the vehicles vary depending on the equipment line. Only the trunk volume of 660 liters is the same for all units.

Initially there was only a 1.6-liter four-cylinder in-line engine with 5 valves per cylinder and a displacement of 1595 cm³. The power was 74 kW. At first it was only available with a four-speed gearbox, which was later replaced by a five-speed gearbox. The Jetta König was only available with an optional 4-stage automatic from November 1998. A month earlier, the first vehicles were manufactured with ABS, which was probably only available as an option.

In April 2001, an EFI engine with electronically controlled direct injection and an output of 64 kW was added, which was reserved for the equipment line "Sea breeze". As of April 2002 there was a 1.9-liter engine and an output of 47 kW. In April 2002 the model was revised , with a new dashboard and a slightly modified front. The new V-shaped grill is particularly striking. At the same time, the prestigious “sea breeze” model was replaced by the new “avant-garde”. It had dual airbags and can be recognized by windows tinted green or black. From June 2002 a naturally aspirated diesel with an output of 68 kW was also available.

In the course of 2004, the rear of the model was also changed. From June 2009 the new RSH motor of the type EA111 with an output of 70 kW was available.

All equipment variants: AT, ATF, Avantgarde, CDX, Ci, CT, GT, GTI, GTX, sea breeze
