The VW Passat B6 (type 3C) was manufactured from February 2005 to July 2010 both in the Emden plant and in the Volkswagen plant in Zwickau as the successor to the B5 model . Another manufacturer is FAW-Volkswagen , which produced the model from November 2007 in its main plant in Changchun under the name VW Magotan in the notchback version and from June 2010 also as a VW Variant in the station wagon version . Chinese production was discontinued in June 2011 to enable the newly developed Passat NMS to be manufactured.
General
- Platform: PQ46
- March 11, 2005: Market launch of the Passat as a sedan
- August 19, 2005: Introduction of the Passat Variant
- Return to the transverse engine
- Introduction of FSI technology ( gasoline direct injection ) and the dual clutch transmission DSG ( direct shift transmission )
- Discontinuation of the Audi four-link front axle introduced in the B5 model; like all older Passat models up to the B4, the new Passat B6 again has MacPherson struts .
- December 2006: Presentation of the most powerful model: the R36 with 3.6-liter VR six-cylinder, gasoline direct injection and 220 kW (300 hp), which went on sale in March 2008.
- The value is, according to calculations by the car expert Ferdinand Dudenhoeffer instead of 60% in Germany, which is a high value for a contemporary middle-class vehicle.
- On February 25, 2010, the one millionth Passat B6 manufactured there left the assembly line at the Emden plant.
- Beginning of July 2010: Premature end of production due to no longer profitable sales figures and conversion of the Emden plant to the production of the successor during the plant holidays .
Stars in the Euro NCAP - Crash Test |
The VW Passat is similar in many components to the VW Golf V (platform PQ35). In order to be able to use a large proportion of identical parts, the 3C was converted back to a transversely installed engine. Compared to its predecessor, it grew in all dimensions. The rear lights, which were vertically aligned on the predecessor, now run horizontally and extend into the trunk lid. The fully chrome-plated radiator grille, which extends into the bumper, is striking. The profile of the 3C is characterized by a bead and the relatively long overhangs. A semi-automatic electric parking brake and a starter button (“ keyless start ”) (optional) are installed as innovations . The Passat is the first car in the world that can be factory-fitted with a SAP telephone (“Premium” hands-free system, from 10/2005). However, it can only be used by cell phones that support the rSAP profile. The Passat is available in seven equipment variants : Trendline, Comfortline, Sportline, Highline, BlueMotion, R36 and Individual . Since the Passat B6 again received a transversely installed drive unit, the W8 or V6 engines from the Audi A4 / A6 and the previous model were no longer offered in this model.
Based on the Passat B6 (chassis, platform and engines), but with the wheelbase of the VW Golf , a mid-range convertible was also offered under the name Eos .
In 2006, 124,611 Passats were newly registered in Germany. The new Passat BlueMotion was introduced in summer 2007 . This has had the 2.0-l TDI engine with 81 kW (110 PS) since 11/2008 and has lower diesel consumption than the 1.9 TDI previously installed. The lower fuel consumption compared to the conventional models is achieved through low-friction tires , a longer gear ratio in the higher gears and an air resistance-optimized underbody. This reduces consumption by around 0.5 l per 100 km. This is already the second BlueMotion variant after the Polo BlueMotion , which came onto the market in summer 2006 and was a great success. VW hoped to surpass this success with the Passat BlueMotion. The surcharge for the 1.9 TDI was around 1000 euros. The 2.0 TDI BlueMotion was discontinued shortly before the end of production. At times it was no longer possible to buy a real BlueMotion. Shortly afterwards, the new 1.6 TDI 105 PS BlueMotion (4.4 l / 100 km standard consumption) was introduced, which could again be ordered as a real BlueMotion. It is based on the Trendline equipment, but also received the R-Line spoiler on the outside.
At the same time, the 2.0 TDI 103 kW (140 PS) was offered as BlueMotion Technology (combined 4.8 l / 100 km standard consumption), as was the 1.6 TDI 77 kW (105 PS) BlueMotion Technology (4.5 l / 100 km standard consumption) . These BlueMotion Technology models, unlike the BlueMotion models (with the exception of the time when the 2.0 TDI with 81 kW (110 PS) existed as BlueMotion, the so-called BlueMotion II), can be used with all equipment lines except Individual and R-Line combine. The BlueMotion Technology models (BMT) did not have a standard R-Line spoiler.
In spring 2008, the top model, the Passat R36 (3.6 l displacement) with 220 kW (300 hp), was launched as a sedan and variant. The top model can be recognized by its completely modified aprons, tinted taillights and more chrome than on the production model.
In February 2008, the 2.0-liter diesel engines with 103 kW / 125 kW (140/170 hp) and pump-nozzle injection that had previously been used were gradually replaced by engines of the same power with common rail injection. The new engines are quieter and smoother. In addition, according to the manufacturer, consumption for models with a direct shift gearbox drops by 0.7 liters to 5.8 liters for the sedan and 5.9 liters for the variant. These engines were also intended for the upcoming A3 and the Golf VI . This engine is already available in the new generation of the Audi A4 and the VW Tiguan .
In mid-2009, a BlueMotion version for the 1.4-liter TSI engine was introduced, which now also meets the EURO 5 emissions standard.
In China, FAW-Volkswagen offers a slightly modified version of the B6 under the name Magotan. Instead, a visually adapted Škoda Superb I runs under the name “Passat” .

Equipment variants
- Trendline: In the basic variant, functions such as the manual “Climatic” air conditioning system and electric parking brake are standard. However, the rear doors are not equipped with power windows. The front indicator glasses are orange and there are no chrome trim strips on the bumpers or doors.
- Comfortline: This variant, tailored to comfort, includes additional details such as standard 6-way driver's seat with height adjustment including electrically adjustable lumbar support, high-quality fabric seat covers, optionally a foldable passenger seat, rain sensor and the "Coming home / Leaving home" function.
- Sportline: In this variant, the focus is on sportiness and dynamism. Sports suspension and 16-inch alloy wheels as well as a three-spoke steering wheel and gear knob in leather underline the sporty character.
- Highline: The most elaborate equipment line, offers, for example, leather-Alcantara seats (full leather for a surcharge), automatic climate control “Climatronic”, aluminum or wooden decorative strips.
- BlueMotion : This equipment line achieves lower consumption through various technical measures; models with a diesel engine also have a diesel particulate filter as standard. With the optional equipment multifunction display "Plus", a gear recommendation is also shown in the speedometer.
- R36: The most powerful engine with 220 kW (300 hp) has its own equipment variant; standard z. B. are 18-inch light alloy wheels and the inlays "dark brushed aluminum".
- R-Line Edition: This equipment line includes sporty rocker panels as well as bumpers, sport seats with a leather look and - like the "R36" - double chrome struts in the radiator grille. There are also "R" lettering under the mirrors.
- Individual
Engines
A 4Motion all-wheel drive could also be ordered for the 2.0 FSI (110 kW) and 2.0 TDI (103/125 kW) engines. The 3.2 and 3.6 R36 were equipped with the 4Motion all-wheel drive system as standard.
