The VW Type 87 , also known as the commander 's car, is a version of the KdF car with all-wheel drive that was built by the Volkswagen factory from 1941 to 1944, primarily for the Wehrmacht. The Wehrmacht designated the vehicle as le. gl. car, 4-seater, 4-wheel drive off-road vehicle type 87 . The all-wheel drive and engine were taken over from the type 166 floating car . A total of 564 vehicles were built. In November 1946, the Volkswagen factory built two more commander's cars from remaining stocks.
Vehicle description and technology
The Type 87 is an all-terrain two-door sedan. It is very similar to the KdF car, from which the body was largely taken over. Since the Type 87 has off-road tires of size 5.25-16, the fenders are wider than on the KdF car. For this purpose, a metal strip was attached to the inside of the fender; the running boards are also correspondingly wider. In addition to the tank, a 20-liter petrol can is located under the front hood, where the spare wheel is normally located. The spare wheel lies above the 40-liter tank, the filler neck of which has been angled for this purpose. The body is bolted to the chassis. Almost all of the cars had a folding sunroof.
The commander's car has a floor assembly that is very similar to the KdF car, but with a larger central tube to accommodate the drive shaft for the front-wheel drive. The front wheels are individually on two longitudinal control arms up and down with torsion springs hung up (so-called crank arm axle ), the rear axle is to trailing arms guided portal - oscillating axle with back gears outside of the semi-axes. The front axle has special steering knuckles to accommodate the drive shafts. It is steered with a screw spindle steering . The rear differential is self-locking . The drive power is transmitted from the engine via a single-disc dry clutch to a manually shifted four-speed gearbox, which is extended by an off-road gear. The off-road gear is engaged together with the front-wheel drive via a second shift lever in the middle of the car. With the front-wheel drive switched on, the maximum speed is 10 km / h and the climbing ability is 75 percent. All-wheel drive is not suitable for use on the road because there is no center differential. The engine is an air-cooled four-cylinder four-stroke boxer gasoline engine with a displacement of 1131 cm 3 and a nominal output of 24.5 hp (18 kW) installed in the rear . The maximum speed is 80 km / h.
Most of the wagons delivered to the German Africa Corps had a tropical equipment with special protection against dust on the fuel supply, air filter and electrical system. In addition, the tropical equipment also includes special balloon tires in size 200-16 for driving through sand, which are named Kronprinzenräder after the manufacturer .
