Fritz Heimhuber senior

Fritz Heimhuber senior (* 1877 ; † 1963 ) was a German photographer and ski pioneer .

Life

Fritz Heimhuber senior was a son of the royal Bavarian court photographer Joseph Heimhuber . He began a three-year photography apprenticeship at the age of 13 and later, like his brother Eugen, first became an assistant and then managing director in his father's business. After Fritz and Eugen Heimhuber had gained a foothold in their profession, the company was entered in the commercial register under the name Photospezialgeschäft- Photoatelier-Sichtpostkarten-Verlag en wholesale & detailed Fritz and Eugen Heimhuber Sonthofen-Oberstdorf, Oberstdorf headquarters .

Fritz Heimhuber was not only active as a photographer, he was also active as an alpinist, ski pioneer and inventor. He applied for patents for several inventions, including a metal ski pole plate. He built his first ski equipment himself, allegedly inspired by Fridtjof Nansen , in 1897; later he worked in the so-called “Skihäusl” in Sonthofen as a ski manufacturer and presented his products at winter sports fairs. Four years after building his first ski equipment, he and Hofrat Dr. Max Madlener from Kempten the first ascent of the Nebelhorn on skis; later Fritz and Eugen Heimhuber were also involved in many other first ski ascents of the Allgäu mountains. In 1910 they offered the first ski courses in the Allgäu. Many objects in the ski museum in Fischen are owned by the Heimhuber brothers.

In 1904 Fritz Heimhuber married Luise Althaus, a granddaughter of Johann Althaus . Luise Heimhuber took care of the photo business in Sonthofen when her husband was busy with his ski manufacture or his trips into the mountains.

In 1938 Fritz and Eugen Heimhuber opened the first color laboratory in the Allgäu.

Fritz Heimhuber senior was the father of Fritz Heimhuber junior , one of the most famous mountain photographers of his time. He entered the business as a partner in 1948. Among other things, he took photos on tours with Luis Trenker and Anderl Heckmair .

Peter Fassl described the approximately 300,000 negatives that accumulated in the Heimhuber photo house from 1877 to around 1950 and that were mainly made by Fritz Heimhuber senior and his brother Eugen as "the cultural and historical memory of the Allgäu." - Photographs to be seen in several exhibitions.
