Josef Heimhuber

Josef Heimhuber (* 1853 ; † 1923 ) was a German royal Bavarian court photographer.

Life

Heimhuber worked as a photographer and publisher. He opened a photo studio in Oberstdorf in 1870 . Shops were also in Immenstadt and Sonthofen ; the Sonthofen store still exists in family ownership.

In 1877 Josef Heimhuber founded the first daylight studio, in 1899 he became a royal Bavarian court photographer.

Heimhuber's granddaughter Lala Aufsberg grew up with him and also became a photographer. His son Fritz Heimhuber and his grandson Eugen Heimhuber also devoted themselves to photography. Heimhuber's descendants opened the first color laboratory in the Allgäu in 1938.

Heimhuber is considered to be a pioneer of landscape photography in the Allgäu ; many of his photographs were distributed as postcards. Heimhuber's pictures were shown in the exhibition Snow - Raw Material of Art in the Vorarlberg State Museum in Bregenz in 2009 . In the same year recordings of the second Andreas Hofer Games from 1931 were exhibited in the Tannheimer Tal, which were erroneously attributed to Josef Heimhuber, but which must have come from one of his descendants.

In addition to the landscape photographs, Heimhuber also made portraits and family pictures that are less well known. In 1896, for example, he took in the von Pappus-Tratzberg family in front of Rauhenzell Castle .
