Lala Aufsberg

Lala Aufsberg (actually Luise Ida Aufsberg ; born February 26, 1907 in Sonthofen ; † May 18, 1976 ibid) was a well-known art photographer.

life and work

After attending primary school and the six-year school for secondary daughters in Immenstadt , she began training as a photo dealer in Oberstdorf in 1932 . After completing her training, Lala Aufsberg moved to Nuremberg , where she worked at the Seitz and Porst photo shops . Around 1931 she joined the photo club Association of Friends of Photography in Nuremberg .

From April 1938 Lala Aufsberg attended the state school for handicrafts and applied arts in Weimar , photography department under Walter Hege . In July 1938 she passed the master's examination for the photography trade, returned to Sonthofen in the same year and opened a photo studio.

In the years 1937 and 1938 Lala Aufsberg documented the Nazi Party rallies in Nuremberg. She received her first artistic commission in 1941/1942, during which she photographed the wall paintings in churches and monasteries in Carinthia and, in another commission, those in Styria .

The "German Documentation Center for Art History" - Bildarchiv Foto Marburg (listed in the UNESCO Archives Portal), which belongs to the Philipps University of Marburg , acquired the Lala Aufsberg Archive with around 46,000 art historical black and white negatives in the formats 6x6 and 9x12 in 1976/1977 and 1996 and 103,000 photos. The main focus is on southern Germany, Austria, Italy, Greece and Egypt.

Aufsberg's almost puristic documentary photography has been published in over 500 art books. They document works of art from almost all European countries.
