Artemotil (also called arteether, not to be confused with Arte m ether ) is from Artemisinin derived semi-synthetic drug for the treatment of by Plasmodium falciparum causing malaria .
Pharmacological properties
Like all artemisinin derivatives, Artemotil acts via an endogenous peroxide group that presumably forms radicals that are toxic to the plasmodia in infected erythrocytes . Artemotil is given parenterally , which is beneficial in debilitated patients who have problems with feeding. In contrast to other artemisinin derivatives, Artemotil has a long half-life of around 20 hours when injected. Artemotil is metabolized in the liver to dihydroartemisinin , which is just as effective as Artemotil.
Preparations and Uses
Artemotil is approved as a monopreparation Artecef ® in the Netherlands for the emergency treatment of severe malaria cases by intramuscular injection . Artecef ® is produced in doses of 50 mg and 150 mg Artemotil in sesame oil .
As a rule, the World Health Organization advises against the use of artemisinin derivatives as a single substance in order to reduce the risk of developing resistance to artemisinin derivatives. In practice, this is likely to be difficult to implement in emergency therapy. Artemotil is to be regarded as a substitute for the infusion of quinine because, unlike quinine, it should be easier to use and show fewer side effects.
