This is how it's done is a series of books with model-specific repair instructions for passenger cars published by Delius Klasing Verlag .

The first edition of the current series appeared in 1974 and dealt with the VW Passat . To date there have been over 150 different editions with a total circulation of more than seven million. The vehicles and information required for writing and illustrating the books are usually provided by the automotive industry . From the first edition to 2017, the author was Hans-Rüdiger Etzold . Since volume 159 (Volvo 740 & 760), volumes published by Haynes Publishing have been translated into German, while Etzold continues to act as editor.

The first volume appeared in 1966 without a statement of the author, it deals with the VW Beetle . The repair instructions were advertised in the magazine “ Gute Fahrt ”, which has been published by the same publisher since 1950. Comparable series are Now I help myself from Motorbuch Verlag, the repair instructions from Bucheli Verlag and the English publisher Haynes Publishing.
