The Audi 80 B3 (also known as Type 89 ) is a car model from Audi , which was presented as the third generation of the Audi 80 in summer 1986 with a fully galvanized body. It replaced the Audi 80 B2 , which had been built since 1978 .
In autumn 1991 it was replaced in Germany by the Audi 80 B4 , which was also offered as a station wagon.
Model history
General
The Audi 80 B3 was initially only available as a four-door sedan from late summer 1986 . Similar to the Audi 100 C3 presented in the summer of 1982 , the Audi 80 had the new “aero design”. The drag coefficient (C w ) could be reduced even further, to 0.29. The model variants previously named according to the scope of the equipment, which had been identified by additions to the model name, were no longer available. The models in the series were offered with the Procon-ten security system, a forerunner of the airbag, which was first available in the Audi 80/90 for an extra charge of around 1,000 marks. With the exception of the diesel variants and the 1.6 liter petrol model, the Audi 80 was also available with the quattro all-wheel drive system .
Apart from the technical innovations, the B3 represented a milestone in the development of automotive design, in that the angularity of the construction was aesthetically overcome for the first time. With this model, Audi laid the foundation for the rise to a premium brand.
Testers complained about the jagged trunk and the "spare wheel" that was delivered instead of a fully-fledged spare wheel. The car was well received by buyers and immediately achieved a top position in the registration statistics. It was carefully crafted and the engines were economical. A high-quality variant of the model was offered as the Audi 90 with five-cylinder engines and the four-cylinder 1.6 TD.
The last copies of the Audi 80 B3 were produced at the end of 1991. At the same time, the revised model series Audi 80 B4 was presented.
Other derivatives
From autumn 1988, a sports coupé using the same platform was also offered under the name Audi Coupé . In the summer of 1990, the Audi S2 Coupé with a 220 hp five-cylinder turbo engine was presented. The S2 Coupé was equipped with a revised vehicle front, which, after the facelift in the summer of 1991, was also used in a slightly modified form in the sedan of the successor model, the Audi 80 B4. Production continued until the end of 1996. The concept of a coupe derived from a sedan was dropped: the successor to the Audi TT , which took on the role of a sporty model in the Audi portfolio.
In June 1991 the Audi Cabriolet followed, based on the Audi 80 B3 . The body details on the exterior already corresponded to those of the Audi 80 B4, including the modified grill. The classic convertible underwent slight modifications in the spring of 1997 before production ended in the summer of 2000.

designation
Various claims have been made that the designation B3 was never officially used by Audi, which is incorrect. In fact, the term was used both during the development of this type and in Audi's historical review. Clear (contemporary) evidence can be found in a publication by Othmar Wickenheiser.
