quattro has been a brand of the automobile manufacturer Audi for its vehicles with all-wheel drive since 1980 .

history

quattro ice block at the Geneva Motor Show

The first Audi with permanent all-wheel drive was the Audi quattro in 1980 . What is new about its drive is that it does not have a separate transfer case , but the center differential is built into the gearbox housing: the differential cage is located at the rear on the hollow gearbox output shaft in which the front axle drive shaft runs.

The all-wheel drive is intended to improve active safety, traction and straight-line stability compared to the otherwise front-wheel drive Audi vehicles . The off-road capability is limited by the normal ground clearance in most Audi models. Exceptions are, for example, the Audi Treser Hunter, a limousine based on the Audi 90 model from Haustuner Walter Treser, the Audi A4 Allroad quattro , an Audi A4 with increased ground clearance, the Audi A6 Allroad quattro, the 1st generation of the Audi “Allroad “Because it was the first off-road vehicle from Audi, or the SUV Audi Q7, Audi Q5, Audi Q3 and, since 2016, the Audi Q2.

All vehicles in the sporty "S" and "RS" series have it as standard.

technology

With the quattro drive, the engine power is distributed to all four wheels. Technically, several principles are used:

  • The mid-engine vehicle R8 has an all-wheel drive with an electrohydraulically controlled multi-plate clutch. The drive torque is variably distributed from the rear axle to the front axle.
  • Vehicles with a transverse engine and quattro (e.g. A3, Q3 and TT) have all-wheel drive with an electrohydraulically controlled multi-plate clutch ( Haldex clutch ). With this vehicle concept, the drive torque is continuously distributed from the front to the rear axle. These vehicles are from the VW Golf - platform derived, and the all-wheel drive is adapted to the transversely mounted front engine.
  • Some models with the classic Audi engine installation position (front / lengthways) have permanent all-wheel drive with a center differential, which in its original form established the reputation of Audi. Various solutions are used as a center differential:
    • Bevel gear differential, manual with dog clutch, 100% lockable (models up to 1986)
    • Planetary gear differential with electronically controlled multi-plate lock ( Audi V8 with automatic transmission)
    • Various limited slip differentials, e.g. B. Torsen differentials of types A, B, C and CSM or
    • Crown gear differentials , which have been continuously developed over the years (other models with longitudinally installed front engine)
    • In some variants, the quattro drive with a self-locking center differential is offered in combination with the sport differential, which can redistribute the torque between the two rear wheels. This increases the driving dynamics even further.
  • In 2016, the A4 allroad quattro appeared with an additional claw- release clutch on the rear axle. It has the effect that the cardan shaft stops when the rear-wheel drive is switched off in order to save fuel. To switch on the all-wheel drive, an electronic control system first closes the multi-plate clutch on the transmission and then engages the rear dog clutch when the cardan shaft has reached the right speed. Audi calls this “quattro with ultra technology”.

advertising

In 1986, Audi released a promotional film in which rally driver Harald Demuth an Audi 100 quattro snowy own strength Pitkävuori - ski jump in the Finnish Jämsä is climbing with a slope of 80 percent. The film was in the advertising film festival in Cannes awarded the Golden Lion. Since a safety rope could be seen, doubts arose as to whether the vehicle was capable of this. For the 25th anniversary of the quattro drive in 2005, these advertising shots were successfully repeated on the same hill with an Audi A6 and under observation of the media.

Audi advertises the Quattro drive more than other features of its vehicles. It last ran in January 2013 under the motto Germany. Land of the quattro. a campaign on television in which the drive concept was specifically linked to the beauty and diversity of the country. Due to its presentation, the commercial , which was broadcast in a similar version in Russia and other countries, received a wide media reception. It was developed by the thjnk agency .
