BMW xDrive

xDrive is the brand for the all-wheel drive system from BMW that since the appearance of the BMW X3 is available in most brand model series.

The system is part of the standard equipment of the BMW X6 . It is available for a surcharge for the current X1 , X3 , X4, X5 , 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 , 5 , 5 GT , 6 and 7 series (also in the touring variants F31 and G31 ), the variants with an extended wheelbase ( G12 ) and in the coupé variant E92 .

functionality

Front engine lengthways:

In models with standard drive , that is front-engine and rear-wheel drive, the system consists of the drive of the front wheels, that is, the front differential, the drive shafts, and an electronically controlled multiplate clutch , which can switch the front-axle within a few milliseconds. The drive force distribution can be regulated continuously and is continuously adapted to the driving situation.

Under normal driving conditions, the system works with a basic distribution of drive torque of 40 to 60 percent between the front and rear axles. In extreme cases, when the rear wheels are on ice and the front wheels are on a non-slip surface, all of the power can be directed to the front axle. To recognize the driving situation, the system receives the necessary information from the sensors of the dynamic stability control (DSC) and the electronic stability program (ESP). For example, oversteering of the vehicle in a curve can be reduced by the system transferring part of the drive torque to the front axle. By opening the clutch, more power is sent to the rear axle (preventing understeer).

Front engine transverse :

A different system is installed in BMW vehicles based on the UKL2 platform with transversely installed engine and front-wheel drive , for example the X1 ( BMW F48 ). Here the front axle is always driven and the rear axle is only activated when required, comparable to the Haldex clutch of the VW Group.
