The BMW X3 (internal name: F25) is a compact SUV from the German car manufacturer BMW and the successor to the first X3 ( E83 ).

Model history

The trade fair premiere took place at the Mondial de l'Automobile 2010 in Paris. On November 20, 2010, BMW launched the model in Germany. The F25 was produced in the US plant of the BMW US Manufacturing Company in Greer (South Carolina) . In autumn 2017 the SUV was replaced by the G01 .

Facelift

From June 2014, a revised version of the F25 was launched, which was formally shown publicly for the first time at the 2014 Geneva Motor Show .

technology

Engines

All models, with the exception of the sDrive 18d, which will be available from November 2012, and the sDrive 20i, which will be available between March 2014 and February 2016, are factory-fitted with xDrive all-wheel drive .

An SCR catalytic converter to reduce NOx emissions had been a standard feature of diesel engines for delivery in the USA since the end of 2008.

transmission

Some model versions have a six-speed manual transmission , there is an optional eight-speed automatic transmission , which is installed as standard in the better-equipped versions. Due to the wide spread of the gears, the speed level and the noise level at high speeds were reduced. Despite the increase from six to eight stages of the ZF-8HP automatic transmission, additional components were not required. Weight and dimensions increased only slightly compared to the ZF-6HP automatic transmission. The eight-speed automatic transmission can skip gears, so it can shift from eighth to second gear in the appropriate driving situation and only has to open one clutch. The transmission is manufactured by ZF Friedrichshafen .

Chassis, steering

The chassis is newly developed. There is electromechanical power steering as standard , but sports steering with variable power steering is also possible instead. The front axle consists of MacPherson struts and lower wishbones split into tension and compression struts , which engage the wheel carriers at two joints next to each other (double-joint tension strut axle). There is a five-link axle at the rear .

Dynamic damper control and driving dynamics control

The electronically controlled dampers adapt to both the road surface and the driving style. The map of the damper control can be influenced by the driver via the "driving dynamics control". The function, which is available for the first time for an X-BMW, makes it possible to choose between the modes “Normal”, “Sport” and “Sport +” at the touch of a button. It influences the damping behavior, the gas pedal progression, the response behavior of the engine, the characteristics of the power steering and ESP and the shift dynamics of the automatic transmission.

safety

The Appreciation of the vehicle at Euro NCAP - Crash Test , which was conducted in 2011, is five stars. In the crash test carried out by the IIHS for the 2012 model year , it was rated “Good” in the “Moderate overlap front” test and was awarded a “2012 Top Safety Pick” overall rating.

Further special equipment

  • Head-Up Display
  • Internet
  • Reversing camera optionally with Top View
  • M sport package
  • Lane departure warning
  • Speed Limit Info, a system for recognizing road signs. To do this, a camera checks road signs with speed restrictions. These are shown in the speedometer and in the head-up display.

Exhaust gas standard violation

The BMW X3 xDrive 20d did not comply with the European emission standard Euro-6 in road tests by the International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT). The permissible value was "exceeded by more than 11 times". With this test result, the X3 performed even worse than the VW Passat objected to by the US environmental agency EPA , it said. "All measurement data indicate that this is not a VW-specific problem". A BMW spokesman told Reuters that he had nothing to add to the statement. When asked by Auto Bild whether BMW used different engine calibrations for test bench measurements than on the road, a BMW spokesman said: “There is no function for recognizing exhaust gas cycles at BMW. All exhaust systems remain active outside of the exhaust cycle. ”The allegation of manipulation on the part of BMW was rejected by Autobild in a clarification. The ICCT also does not provide any information on the general conditions of the road test that would enable the results to be reproduced or explained.
