The BMW Concept X6 ActiveHybrid is a concept vehicle of the first full hybrid from BMW and can be driven purely electrically at low speeds. The concept vehicle premiered at the IAA Frankfurt in September 2007. The production version was presented at the IAA 2009 and was launched in autumn 2009.

In addition to the “V8 Twin Turbo” with “High Precision Injection” gasoline direct injection , the central component of the BMW Concept X6 ActiveHybrid is an ECVT transmission (Electric Continuously Variable Transmission) made up of three planetary gear sets , known as the “Two-Mode Active Transmission”. Thanks to the two-mode technology, the interaction between electric motors and combustion engines can be varied. Two modes of operation are implemented: One mode is available for starting with high tractive effort and lower speeds. The second mode is optimized for higher speeds.

The vehicle expanded the BMW X models, at that time consisting of the BMW X1 , BMW X3 , X5 and the BMW X6 .
