The BMW 6 Series (internal designation: E63 - Coupé , E64 - Cabriolet ) is a car built between 2003 and 2010 in the upper middle class .

Model history

In late summer 2003, the vehicle was formally on the IAA Frankfurt, as successor to the mid-1999 set 8-coupe E31 presented. A similarity to the BMW Z9 concept vehicle presented in 1999 is seen in the design of the vehicle . The designation "6er" was also used for the E24 series, which was discontinued in spring 1989 .

In August 2003, production of the revived 6-series began as a coupe. From April 2004 BMW officially offered a 6-series convertible with the internal name E64 for the first time. It was unveiled in December 2003 and was formally shown to the public for the first time at the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) 2004 in January 2004. The manufacturer presented the M variant M6 as a coupé at the Geneva Motor Show in spring 2005. In autumn 2005, Alpina presented the Alpina B6 based on the E64 / E63 for the first time .

Facelift

On October 6, 2007, the revised 6-series came onto the market. It was officially shown for the first time at a vehicle fair a month earlier at the IAA 2007.

In addition to the engines, the exterior and interior design were also slightly changed. Among other things, the third brake light was integrated into the trunk lid. The reflectors in the rear bumper are flatter, making the rear appear wider.

In July 2010 the production of the 6 series was ended. The successor F12 / F13 came onto the market as a convertible ( F12 ) in spring 2011. The F13 Coupé appeared in autumn 2011.

technology

The vehicle is based on the platform of the E60 from the 5 series , which was renewed in June 2003 . The same applies to the engines and the technical components.

drive

With the launch only the Coupe 645Ci was with a gasoline engine with 4.4 liter displacement and 245 kW (333 hp) maximum power available. A few months later, another variant called the 630i was added to the list of offers as a coupé and convertible. The six-cylinder engine has a displacement of three liters and has a maximum output of 190 kW (258 hp).

In July 2005, the 645Ci was replaced by the 650i. The 4.8 liter V8 engine had a maximum output of 270 kW (367 hp) and had a higher maximum torque than the 4.4 liter engine. This drive was also available in both the Coupé and the Cabriolet.

With the facelift, two new engines were introduced: a six-cylinder gasoline engine with direct gasoline injection and a maximum of 200 kW (272 hp) from the 3 and 5 series and the biturbo-charged six-cylinder diesel engine from the 335d and 535d models with 210 kW (286 hp). With the latter engine, the vehicle accelerates from 0 to 100 km / h in less than seven seconds.

The eight-cylinder engine in the 650i was only slightly revised during the facelift. The “Efficient Dynamics” package was supposed to reduce fuel consumption by five percent. The optional automatic transmission has been replaced by the sports automatic transmission.

Furnishing

From September 2008 the newly revised hard disk navigation system (CIC) found its way into the 6 series. A sports package was also offered as an option. Its features consisted of a sportier exhaust system with its own sound character and tailpipes in dark chrome, additional raised precision lines in the bonnet, exterior colors only available in conjunction with the package (“carbon black” and “imolar red”) and 19-inch wheels in the “double-spoke” design 288 “with mixed tires.
