Model history

It was presented in June 2018 in the variants X5 xDrive40i, X5 xDrive50i, X5 xDrive30d and X5 M50d, had its formal trade fair premiere in October at the Mondial Paris Motorshow 2018 and was launched in November 2018. In August 2018, the X5 xDrive45e iPerformance, a plug-in hybrid model, was presented. In May 2019, the X5 M50i variant, which has exterior equipment similar to the X5 M50d and has been in production since August 2019, was presented. Almost a year after the presentation, the plug-in hybrid variant went on sale at the beginning of September 2019.

At the IAA 2019 in Frankfurt / Main, a concept vehicle of an X5 with fuel cell was presented as i Hydrogen Next .

At the LA Auto Show in November 2019, BMW is presenting the X5 and X6 as M versions (F95 and F96) with the drive from the BMW M5 F90 . The market launch of both models should be in April 2020.

production

Production continues at BMW's Spartanburg plant in the USA. The vehicle has been assembled at the Brazilian BMW plant in Araquari since mid-2019. SKD kits serve as the basis for the finished vehicles. Special protection vehicles are completed at the Toluca plant in Mexico.

technology

For the G05 BMW uses the modular CLAR - platform on which all future models of the 3 Series to the BMW X7 build.

body

The wheelbase has been extended by 42 mm compared to its predecessor. The body again has a two-part tailgate, which now opens and closes completely electrically (previously: only upper flap).

The cheapest c W value is 0.31 for the 30d or 0.32 for the other models; the frontal area of this X5 is 2.90 m² (exemplary comparison: the frontal area of the BMW X3 G01 is 2.65 m², that of the VW Golf VII 2.19 m².)

inner space

A third row of seats has been available since 2019. The trunk has a capacity of 645 liters in the five-seat configuration. The instrument panel is exclusively equipped with digital displays ("BMW Live Cockpit Professional"). Its operating system enables wireless software updates.

landing gear

The chassis is equipped as standard with adaptive shock absorbers and steel springs, on request with air suspension for both axles with an adjustment range of 8 cm, with which the ground clearance can be increased in the terrain. The front wheels are guided on double wishbones in aluminum construction, the rear axle is a five-link axle in lightweight steel construction. A differential lock and rear axle steering are available on request. All wheels are braked with ventilated disc brakes. Wheels with rim diameters of 18 to 22 inches are possible ex works.

Lighting / special equipment

X5 headlights with laser light

Another special feature is laser light: Laser diodes measure only a tenth the size of conventional LEDs . Nevertheless, they shine ten times as brightly and therefore twice as far - the high beam should shine up to 600 meters. The deep blue laser diode rays are converted into white light with a color temperature of 5500 Kelvin with the help of a yellow fluorescent substance. That corresponds to the color of daylight.

A fragrance organ and a panoramic glass roof decorated with 15,000 illuminated graphic elements (“Sky Lounge”) are also available. A graphic printed on the glass is illuminated from the side by LED elements.

Drive and motors

All engines offered in Europe meet the Euro-6d-Temp emissions regulation. The model with a V8 gasoline engine (xDrive50i) is not available in Europe. The power is transmitted by an eight-speed automatic transmission from ZF with Steptronic. Models for China, including the over sold in Europe gasoline engines weaker xDrive30i with 195  kW maximum power from a 2.0-liter R4 -Motor, are certified to China VI and models for the North American market after the Bin-125 standard .

The G05 was launched as a six-cylinder gasoline engine model with the B58 engine, which was revised in October 2018 . In August 2019, the engine range was expanded to include the  inline four-cylinder diesel engine variant xDrive25d as an entry-level model and the X5 M50i as a further V8 petrol engine variant with a maximum output of 390 kW (530 PS). The diesel engine model with the maximum output of 195 kW is called differently depending on the market: in Europe it is called xDrive30d, in Japan xDrive35d. For the Russian market, however, the maximum output of the xDrive30d differs and is 183 kW there.

All versions offered in Europe have rear-wheel biased xDrive all-wheel drive . A gasoline engine model with rear-wheel drive (sDrive40i) is also offered in the USA .

The plug-in hybrid model, which has been available since autumn 2019, has a gasoline engine with a maximum output of 210 kW and a synchronous machine built into the transmission with a peak output of 83 kW. With a drive battery with a net capacity of approx. 21  kWh , an electric range of 67 to 87 km results after the WLTP driving cycle.

By a twin-scroll - turbo charged V8 gasoline engine with 4.4 liter displacement, the variants of the driven X5M F95. While the weaker model has a maximum of 441 kW of both, the more powerful Competition version has 460 kW.

Another variant with a diesel engine is to be available from May 2020: the xDrive40d. It is to be equipped with a maximum output of 250 kW from a 3.0-l engine with a mild hybrid system , i.e. it has an additional 48-V electrical system and a belt-driven starter generator with 8 kW. The diesel engine has a stage turbocharger in which both the low and high pressure turbochargers have adjustable guide vanes . There are two points in the exhaust system for the SCR catalytic converter with a metering unit for the addition of AUS 32 .

safety

Safety assessments

The vehicle was in the 2018 Euro NCAP - Crash test program total rated five stars. When the IIHS attempted “Moderate overlap front” , it was rated “Good” for the 2019 model year and received the “2019 TopSafetyPick +” award. In the US NCAP program , it also received an overall rating of four stars in the 2019 model year.

Special protection variant

In addition to the unarmored versions, there is a vehicle with resistance class VR6. It is called X5 Protection VR6. The maximum power of the engine of 390 kW corresponds to that of the M50i. A medal with the embossing “Visible Agility. Invisible Armor. ”Included.

Concept vehicle i Hydrogen Next

In the concept vehicle presented in 2019, the fuel cell is positioned at the front instead of an internal combustion engine, while the electric motor and buffer battery are located on the rear axle; the hydrogen tanks take the place of the cardan shaft, exhaust and tank. This version is to be built in small series in 2022. BMW has been testing the fuel cell drive in a test fleet of the 5 Series GT F07 since 2015 .
