The BMW 2 Series is a series of compact- class models from the German car manufacturer BMW . A coupé has been on offer since 2014 (internal: F22 ) and since 2015 a convertible (internal: F23 ). There are two motorsport variants for customer racing , the BMW M235i Racing or, since 2018, BMW M240i Racing , of the coupé variant .
Model history
The coupé has been in production since November 2013 and has been available since March 8, 2014. It was officially shown publicly for the first time at the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in 2014.
As a coupe, the 2 Series replaces the corresponding variant of the first 1 Series and is also the sister model of the BMW F20 . The Cabriolet replaces that of the 1 Series . This means that BMW carries its coupes and convertibles under their own type designation. The 2 Series Cabriolet (F23) was shown on the Internet for the first time on September 10, 2014, had its public premiere at the Mondial de l'Automobile 2014 and was introduced in Germany on February 28, 2015. A facelift was carried out in 2017.
Body and design
The 2 Series Coupé and Cabriolet, like the BMW X1 and the five-door 1 Series , are produced in the Saxon BMW plant in Leipzig . The vehicle is intended to pay homage to the BMW 2002 .
The body has been enlarged slightly compared to its predecessor, in length by 70 mm to 4.43 meters, in width and wheelbase each 3 cm, the track by 40 mm. This also increases head, shoulder and legroom as well as the trunk (by 20 to 390 liters). The weight remained the same, while the drag coefficient (c W value) was improved to 0.29.
New design features are the side bead, flared wheel arches and four contour lines on the bonnet, as well as the rear area with the two tailpipes. The rear lights are each made in one piece and have L-shaped light bars with LED technology.
In addition to the basic model, four other equipment packages are offered: "Advantage", "Luxury Line", "Sport Line" and "M Sport".
BMW M2 (since 2017)
Facelift
A facelift took place in the summer of 2017. The rear lights and the shape of the headlights were revised; the latter have been standard with LED technology since then .
Engines
When the 2 Series Coupé was launched, two petrol and three diesel engines were available: 220i with a maximum output of 135 kW (184 hp), M235i with 240 kW (326 hp), 218d with 105 kW (143 hp), 220d with 135 kW ( 184 PS) and 225d with 160 kW (218 PS). When the 2 Series Cabriolet was launched, three petrol and one diesel engines were available: 220i, 228i, M235i and 220d. The 220d Cabriolet has already been equipped with the new B47D20 modular engine with 140 kW (190 PS). In September 2014, BMW announced that the new engine would also be used in the 220d Coupé from November 2014. In 2015, the engine range was expanded to include a three-cylinder gasoline engine.
Some gasoline engines of the 2-series are equipped with turbochargers with the so-called "Twin Scroll" technology , called "TwinPower" . Due to this construction, the pressure fluctuations in the exhaust gas flow act in such a way that the exhaust gas back pressure is reduced. Gas changes and thus consumption, performance and responsiveness should be improved.
The gasoline engines are available with a displacement of 1.5, 2.0 or 3.0 liters, variable valve control ("VANOS") and gasoline direct injection . The diesel engines have common rail injection . The engines used in the three vehicle models have a displacement of 2.0 liters, but deliver different outputs.
Petrol engines
218i: This has been the new entry-level model since March 2015. A new three-cylinder in-line engine from the BMW B38 engine series with a displacement of 1.5 liters is installed. This has a maximum output of 100 kW (136 hp) and a maximum torque of 220 Nm. The combined standard fuel consumption is given as 5.1 to 5.6 liters per 100 kilometers.
220i : The four-cylinder gasoline engine was the entry-level model when it was launched in 2014. It has a displacement of two liters, has a maximum output of 135 kW (184 hp) and offers a maximum torque of 270 Nm. With a manual gearbox, the combined average consumption is 6.1 to 6.3 liters of fuel per 100 kilometers.
228i : The four-cylinder gasoline engine model was sold from 2014 to 2016. It has a displacement of two liters, has a maximum output of 180 kW and a maximum torque of 350 Nm.
230i : The four-cylinder gasoline engine from the BMW B48 engine series with a two-liter displacement has been available since 2016, has a maximum output of 185 kW and offers a maximum torque of 350 Nm.
M235i : The model offered from 2013 to 2016 has a three-liter in-line six-cylinder petrol engine (N55). The maximum output is 240 kW (326 PS) and the maximum torque 450 Nm with a combined standard fuel consumption of 7.6 to 8.1 liters per 100 kilometers, depending on the type of transmission.
M240i : The (B58) in-line six-cylinder gasoline engine has a displacement of three liters, has a maximum output of 250 kW (340 hp) and a maximum torque of 500 Nm with a combined standard fuel consumption of 7.1 to 7.8 liters per 100 kilometers, depending on the type of transmission .
M2 : The most powerful unit (N55) also has a three-liter displacement, develops a maximum of 272 kW (370 hp) and has a maximum torque of 465 Nm with a combined standard consumption of 7.9 to 8.5 liters of fuel per 100 kilometers. The M2 is only available for the Coupé.
M2 Competition : In spring 2018, BMW presented the M2 Competition with a maximum output of 302 kW (410 hp), a new top model in the series. The three-liter gasoline engine is also only available for the coupé.
M2 CS : The 331 kW (450 PS) M2 CS was presented at the beginning of November 2019. It is only available as a coupé.
Diesel engines
218d : The diesel engine has a displacement of two liters, develops a maximum of 105 kW (143 hp) and has a maximum torque of 320 Nm with a combined fuel consumption of 4.3 to 4.5 liters per 100 kilometers.
220d : With the same displacement, the engine initially delivers a maximum of 135 kW (184 hp) and has a maximum torque of 380 Nm and consumes 4.5 to 4.8 liters per 100 kilometers in the combined standard cycle. In September 2014, BMW announced that it would equip the 220d with the new B47 modular engine , with 140 kW (190 PS) and 400 Nm. The combined standard fuel consumption drops to 4.1 to 4.4 l / 100 km, with the optional automatic transmission to 3.8 to 4.1 l / 100 km.
225d : The top model has a maximum output of 160 kW (218 hp) and a maximum torque of 450 Nm. The combined standard fuel consumption should be 4.7 liters per 100 kilometers with the standard 8-speed automatic transmission. Since July 2015 the engine has developed a maximum of 165 kW (224 hp); Adjustable guide vanes in front of the turbine of the turbocharger ( variable turbine geometry charger ) are now available on both chargers, previously only on the high-pressure charger .
Motorsport
For customer racing , BMW has been selling racing vehicles based on the M235i since 2014 as BMW M235i Racing , which has been modified in some points. A facelift was carried out in 2018 and the name was adapted to the road vehicle on BMW M240i Racing . Vehicles that are still based on the M235i can be adapted to the M240i using the "Evo package". The vehicles are used e.g. B. in a brand cup within the VLN .
