Damask by Sigeion

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Damastes of Sigeion (Greek Δαμάστης Damástēs ) was an ancient Greek historian . He lived in the 5th century BC. Chr.

Damastes was born in Sigeion (Σίγειον) in the Troas . According to the Lexicon Suda , he was a contemporary of Herodotus and a pupil of Hellanikos of Lesbos . However, this results in a considerable time discrepancy, since Herodotus at the beginning, while Hellanikos at the end of the 5th century BC. Worked. In recent research he is therefore often seen more as a contemporary of Thucydides .

Damastes wrote a total of six works, the titles of which are at least known, including:

  • History of Greece (Perì tôn en Helládi genoménon); this work also seems to have gone into the Persian Wars (fragment 4).
  • About the ancestors and participants in the Trojan War (Peri goneon kai progonon ton eis Ilion strateusamenon)
  • Peoples and cities catalog (ethnon katalogos kai poleon)

All works have been lost except for a few fragments.
