BMW N47
The N47 is a turbocharged inline four-cylinder diesel engine from the car manufacturer BMW . Completely redeveloped, it appeared in 2007 and replaced the predecessor M47 . Since 2014 it has been successively replaced by its successor, the B47 .
construction
The engine has an aluminum crankcase with thermally joined gray cast iron liners. To improve the running smoothness, two balance shafts with needle bearings are integrated in the crankcase (not in the 85 kW variant in the 116d). The four-valve cylinder head has two overhead camshafts that operate the valves via roller rocker arms. The common rail injection system in the N47 operates with pressures of 1600 to 2000 bar. The fuel is injected into the combustion chamber via centrally positioned solenoid valve injectors or piezo injectors. In most variants, a turbocharger with adjustable turbine guide vanes is installed; the most powerful expansion stages (150 kW or 160 kW) have two turbochargers that work on a combined principle of register charging and multi-layer charging. The exhaust gases are cleaned by a diesel particulate filter arranged close to the engine with an upstream oxidation catalytic converter .
The electronic engine control was also designed for the following measures to increase efficiency:
- Automatic start-stop
- intelligent generator control for braking energy recovery
- needs-based regulation of ancillary units
- Switching point display
Performance kits
For some models, BMW offers Power Kits from BMW Performance for these diesel engines. This is possible with the models 120d (E81, E82, E87, E88) and 320d (E90, E91, E92, E93) with 177 hp, which after the revision produce 197 hp (145 kW). The maximum torque increases by 40 to 390 Newton meters. From March 2010, the Power Kit will also be available for the 184 hp (135 kW) ex-works version of the N47, which after the revision has an output of 200 hp (147 kW). The maximum torque increases by 40 to 420 Newton meters.

Problems with the timing chain
The timing chain of the N47 engine family is considered to be prone to excessive wear. This can lead to a premature failure. The result can be serious damage to the engine. The problem affects all engines of the N47 series and all performance variants up to the production date September 1, 2013. A lengthening of the timing chain is often indicated by a distinct rattle. We recommend checking and, if necessary, replacing the timing chain from a mileage of 100,000 km. To do this, however, the engine must be removed because the timing chain is installed on the transmission side. At the beginning of 2014, the goodwill regulation on the part of BMW was extended to 8 years and 200,000 km, as the number of complaints from customers and workshops increased. As with the 2008 change, the goodwill regulation means that the engine is restored to a repairable condition and not replaced. The change to goodwill only takes place in the event of irreparable engine damage within a period of 25 months after purchase or for vehicles not older than 8 years and 200,000 km mileage.
Euro 5 update
From September 2018, the KBA sent letters about the Euro 5 software update, mostly BMW models with N47D20 engines built from 2010 onwards. This is intended to reduce nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions. As of November 2018, around 2 million vehicles have received the update. The changes affect the exhaust gas recirculation .
