The BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo (short: BMW 5 Series GT ; internal designation: F07 ) is a hatchback sedan by BMW built between 2009 and 2017 . It is generally assigned to the upper middle class , but is referred to by BMW as an upper class vehicle. Technically, the 5 Series GT is derived from the 7 Series (F01) and 5 Series (F10) ( PL6 platform ), which means that it is actually located between the two.

Model history

As early as 2007, assumptions were made about a not yet specific vehicle concept called “Progressive Activity Sedan” (PAS), which should come onto the market in the 2010 model year or calendar year. At the beginning of 2009, photos of the near-series BMW Concept 5 Series Gran Turismo , which was later shown publicly at the Geneva Motor Show of the same year, were published for the first time.

The formal world premiere of the series model was at the IAA 2009 in Frankfurt am Main. BMW launched the 5 Series GT on October 24, 2009. The starting price in Germany was (as of November 2011) € 55,900 (including 19% VAT).

When the US market was launched, the importer there expected annual sales of 4,000 to 8,000 units per year. In fact, 2,848 vehicles were sold in 2010 and 720 in the first four months of 2011.

In 2013 the model was revised; the formal premiere of the revision was again the IAA. After almost 150,000 units, it was replaced by the BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo (G32) at the end of 2017 .

design

The 5 Series Gran Turismo has raised seats and is the first four-door BMW to have frameless side windows. The headlights contain corona rings in LED technology. The front and rear areas are based on the BMW  F01 . It is the first model from BMW that is reminiscent of a van and is designed to be less dynamic.

Furnishing

Instead of classic instruments, the cockpit consists of a display in the instrument panel on which chrome rings are glued. The TFT screen for the iDrive infotainment system in the middle of the dashboard has a diagonal of 7 inches (with the Professional navigation system: 10.2 inches).

The standard "Driving Dynamics Control" with the levels "Normal", "Sport" and "Sport +" influences not only the gear shift dynamics, but also the accelerator and steering assistance characteristics. In conjunction with the optional " Adaptive Drive " (with roll stabilization ), the independently adjustable shock absorbers are also included in the scope of control, and a "Comfort" mode is also available. In the "SPORT +" setting and in traction mode, the DSC driving stability control intervenes later.

The bi- xenon double headlights, which are subject to a surcharge, contain LED daytime running lights as well as adaptive headlights with light distribution and cornering lights .

The 5 Series GT also has several driver assistance systems such as:

  • Adaptive cruise control with stop & go function (automatic acceleration from standstill and braking to standstill)
  • Lane change assistant
  • Lane departure warning
  • Night vision assistant with person recognition
  • Head-Up Display
  • xDrive
  • backup camera
  • SideView , two cameras in the front bumper that look to the left and right
  • TopView , two additional cameras in the exterior mirrors, the TopView cameras, the reversing camera and the PDC sensors create an overall picture of the vehicle and its surroundings and show it from a bird's eye view
  • a speed limit display. To do this, a camera checks road signs with speed restrictions. These are shown in the speedometer and the head-up display.

With comparable equipment, the 5 Series GT was around 3000 € more expensive than a 5 Series Touring (E61) .

body

In the series, the rear bench seat is in three parts and can be replaced by two electrically adjustable individual seats. The legroom in the rear corresponds to that of the 7 Series, while the headroom is similar to that of the X5 (E70) . Depending on the position of the rear seats, which can be slid by up to 100 millimeters, there is space in the trunk between 440 and 590 liters of luggage. If the rear seats and the partition are folded down, a loading area that is slightly inclined at the front and level at the rear is created, which can hold up to 1700 liters ( 5 Series Touring maximum 1650 liters). The tailgate is divided into two parts and can be compared to that of the Škoda Superb .

The c w value is 0.29.

safety

In addition to the anti-lock braking system (ABS) including Brake Assist and Cornering Brake Control (CBC), there are belt tensioners and belt force limiters as well as an electronic stability program (DSC) with traction control (ASC + T). There are also eight airbags (driver / front passenger, side airbags and full-length head airbags). The front seats are equipped with accident-active headrests that are designed to reduce the risk of whiplash in the event of a rear-end collision . There are also tires with emergency running properties and a flat tire indicator. The standard equipment also includes fog lights and adaptive brake lights .

Engines

When it was launched, the 5 Series Gran Turismo was available with three engine variants. Two turbo-charged gasoline engines with 3 and 4.4 liter displacement and a 3-liter in-line six-cylinder diesel engine . In spring 2010 the 535d added to the engine range. The six- and eight-cylinder engines are also available in the xDrive all-wheel drive version .

The gasoline engines have spray- guided direct gasoline injection (High Precision Injection) . The diesel engine models have a particle filter as standard . All engines meet at least the EU5 emissions standard.

environment

The term BMW EfficientDynamics brings together several technical innovations that result in lower fuel consumption while at the same time increasing performance. The standard eight-speed automatic transmission from ZF Friedrichshafen should reduce fuel consumption by up to 6% compared to conventional six-speed automatic transmissions.

Test vehicles with alternative drives

Plug-in hybrid drive

In 2014 the manufacturer showed the “Power eDrive Concept” prototype, a vehicle with a plug-in hybrid drive . It has a gasoline engine from the BMW B38 engine series with a maximum output of 160 kW, a 125 kW electric motor on the front axle and a 200 kW electric motor on the rear axle. The system output is over 440 kW.

Fuel cell drive

In 2015, BMW announced that a small 5-series GT test fleet had been equipped with the fuel cell from the Toyota Mirai . The double-walled, tubular hydrogen tank developed by BMW is placed in the cardan tunnel and enables ranges of over 500 km. The electric motor for the drive has an output of 180 kW (245 hp) and transfers its power to the rear axle.
