The E60 series describes the fifth generation of the 5 series from the car manufacturer BMW . The "Touring" station wagon is referred to internally as the E61 .

The series was presented in July 2003 as the successor to the E39 . With the E60, the iDrive operating concept was introduced in the 5 Series, which can also be found in other series of the manufacturer. The vehicle is assigned to the upper middle class . The best-selling model of the E60 is the 530d. The E60 was produced in the BMW plant in Dingolfing , in the Egyptian plant of the Bavarian Auto Group , which is located in the city of October 6 , and in the People's Republic of China by Brilliance Motors in the city of Shenyang .

In spring 2010 the sedan E60 was replaced by the successor model F10 , while the Touring E61 was replaced by the F11 in autumn 2010 after 277,588 units.

Model history

General

The sedan available for the presentation of the model series bears the series designation E60, while the Touring estate model built from April 2004 is designated as E61. The vehicle, designed by Davide Arcangeli under the leadership of Chris Bangle , dispensed with a rear, like that of the 7 Series E65 with a clearly attached tailgate ("bangle rear"), which had met with strong criticism and also came up with more pleasing headlights than the one 7 series.

Due to the great demand and the special requirements, a long version of the E60 was developed for the Chinese market and introduced in the variants 523Li, BMW 525Li and BMW 530Li. The 525Li and 530Li have a redesigned rear console, which includes an entertainment system with a DVD player and two 8- inch screens in the headrests of the front seats, as well as rear air vents above the transmission tunnel . By extending the center distance between the B and C-pillars by 140 millimeters, there is more legroom in the rear.

From the beginning of 2005, the M5 was available as a sedan with a 5.0-liter V10 engine. The wagon version was introduced with the revision that took place in spring 2007. All-wheel drive (with the designation xi or xd ; since September 2008 xDrive or d xDrive ) was available in both body versions.

body

A special feature of the E60 is the weight-reduced aluminum front end ( GRAV ). As was the case with the Porsche 928 , the front end is made of aluminum, while the passenger cell and the rear end are made of steel. Thanks to the weight savings in the front part of the vehicle, an axle load distribution of 50:50 is achieved.

Furnishing

The E60 has an electronic stability program that can be switched off , which BMW calls Dynamic Stability Control (DSC). A flat tire indicator (RPA) recognizes changes in the air pressure of one or more tires based on differences in the speed of the wheels and warns the driver with a light. In the event of a collision, the active head restraints, which will be standard from autumn 2007, move closer to the head and thus prevent possible cervical vertebrae injuries.

Driver assistance systems

HUD of an E60

A head-up display (HUD) projects information onto the windshield so that the driver no longer has to look away from the road to read the speed or the route.

As special equipment also was BMW Night Vision ( Night View Assist ) available. In contrast to the Mercedes-Benz S-Class (where a near-infrared system from Bosch with active infrared lighting is used), BMW uses passive thermal imaging technology. Thermal radiation from objects and people is recorded by a camera in the front apron and shown on the iDrive display .

At speeds above 70 km / h, this system warns of the threat of leaving the lane by vibrating the steering wheel. A camera in the interior mirror detects existing and clearly visible road markings. If a lane marking is recognized, the system signals that it is ready to warn. The system can be switched on or off via a steering wheel button. The last selected setting is saved for the next trip. In construction site situations where the markings are sometimes ambiguous, the system automatically switches to inactive and then reactivates automatically.

Lighting technology

The BMW E60 has optional adaptive brake lights and adaptive headlights . From spring 2007 there were also daytime running lights via corona rings and from autumn 2007 cornering lights and rear lights in LED technology. The high beam assistant, which is subject to a surcharge, automatically switches the high beam on or off, preventing oncoming traffic from being dazzled. From March 2005, the xenon headlights were converted from D2S to D1S, and the ballast for the xenon burner was also changed.

entertainment

There are various entertainment options for the E60, for example the Professional navigation system with an 8.8-inch screen and a DVD drive. A DAB tuner for digital radio reception and a DVB-T tuner for television reception are also available. The audio signal can be reproduced via the optional LOGIC7 sound system from harman / kardon with 13 loudspeakers including two subwoofers under the front seats; it enables distortion-free playback of up to 110 db (A) . The system uses a 360 ° sound stage and also supports MP3 with ID3 tags . The signal is transmitted to the amplifier (nine channels, 420 watts ) via a MOST bus interface. In addition, there is now the Individual sound system with 16 loudspeakers and 825 watts of power.

safety

In addition to ABS (with Brake Assist and Cornering Brake Control ) , all BMW E60 have seat belt tensioners , ESP with traction control (called Dynamic Stability Control, DSC or Dynamic Traction Control, DTC) and a total of six airbags (driver / front passenger, two side airbags and full-length head airbags). Since the facelift, side airbags have also been available for the rear passengers. When Euro NCAP - Crash Test in 2004 he was awarded in the assessment of occupant safety Four Star (29 points) and in the child safety four stars out of five (42 points). Pedestrian safety was rated with two points and one of four possible stars.

After a Swedish car newspaper criticized the safety of a fully loaded 523i, which showed dangerous breakouts in the moose test, the editorial team was invited to the test site in Munich. There they did a moose and lane change test together. BMW justified the dangerous breakout with the fact that the ESP allowed a slight tail swing and only then intervened.

Engines

  • From September 2005, the BMW Group offered major customers fleet models BMW 520d and 525d. Similar to the production vehicle in terms of technology and equipment, the Edition Fleet included modified engine variants. Instead of 120 kW (163 PS) or 130 kW (177 PS), the fleet model only developed 110 kW (150 PS) or 120 kW (163 PS). These models were always identical to the engine in the standard version. The power reduction is only brought about by changing certain parameters in the software of the engine control unit ( Bosch EDC16 ).
  • From September 2008 this edition Fleet was also offered as a special edition for private buyers .

Facelift

BMW 5 Series with M sports package

On March 24, 2007 the revised version of the 5 Series was presented. The external appearance has only been slightly revised. The most noticeable external changes are new bumpers, taillights with LED technology, revised fog lights and main headlights in clear glass optics, and a modified license plate frame in the tailgate. The surrounds of the BMW double kidney grille are now level with the surfaces of the front apron. In addition, the surround for the license plate is more precisely defined on the new BMW 5 Series Sedan.

In the interior, the door panels were revised and other materials were chosen. The control elements have a pearlescent chrome design and the revised iDrive now has eight freely programmable favorite buttons that were introduced with the BMW X5 . Additional storage options increase the functionality. The two-tone door panels are the most striking signal for the new style of interior design. The buttons for window lifters and mirror adjustment have now been integrated into the armrest.

Technical innovations included an optional lane departure warning, daytime running lights via corona rings , cornering lights and a 6-speed sports automatic transmission that can downshift up to four gears at once. This included a new selector lever and shift paddles on the steering wheel. There is also a modified range of engines. Apart from changes in the performance data, all gasoline engines except for the V8 version have been converted to direct injection .

On May 26, 2007, the M5  Touring was added at a base price of 94,100 euros. There were also visible changes to the iDrive software. The appearance of the menu and the map material as well as some menu items have been changed. This change had the version number PROGMAN 25 .

In addition, the model had a modern battery charge control with which the battery is charged during the overrun and braking phases (brake energy recovery). Further measures that reduced consumption were a switching point display for manual models and actively controlled brake and cooling air flaps to improve aerodynamics. A new engine variant was the 520d (130 kW / 177 PS), which consumes 5.1 l / 100 km and emits 136 g CO 2 / km.

As of October 2008, the “Professional” hard drive navigation system was delivered with a new iDrive control and can play DVD films when it is stationary. The monitor has a resolution of 1280 × 480. Data can be transferred to the internal hard drive via a USB port in the glove compartment; 12 GB of the 80 GB are reserved for music. In September 2009, the 5 Series received modified exterior mirrors to meet new EU directives.
