Madinat as-Sadis min Uktubar ( Arabic مدينة السادس من أكتوبر, DMG Madīnat as-Sādis min Uktūbar , German  city ​​of October 6th , English 6th of October City ) is an Egyptian city in the governorate of al-Jiza .

history

The city, which was newly founded in 1979 on the basis of the decree 504 of the President Anwar as-Sadat , is located approx. 17 kilometers west of the pyramid plateau of Gīza and 32 kilometers from the city ​​center of Cairo . The city now covers an area of ​​about 400 square kilometers. Currently (2017) around 350,000 people live here.

The city's name is derived from the 1973 October War (also known as the Yom Kippur War ). On October 6, 1973, Egyptian forces crossed the Suez Canal and broke through the strategically important Bar-Lew Line . Even if the Egyptian armed forces could not record a victory in the end, this is considered the most important military action under Sadat. As a result, peace negotiations took place and the peace treaty between Egypt and Israel was signed in 1979. October 6th is also the holiday of the Egyptian Armed Forces.

In April 2008, the city became the capital of the newly founded governorate as-Sadis min Uktubar , but this was repealed on April 14, 2011.

economy

In addition to numerous universities, the city also has an extensive industrial park. The Egyptian automotive industry is predominantly located here. In the 7th district is the el-Ḥuṣarī Mosque ( Arabic مسجد الحصري). The mosque is named after the sheikh and Koran reciter Maḥmūd Chalīl el-Ḥuṣarī († 1980).
