Stars in the Euro-NCAP - crash test (2019) 5 Stars

The BMW 1 (internal series designation F40 ) is the third generation of the compact class - Automobiles of BMW . It is the first station wagon in the model series to be available with front-wheel drive and follows a notchback sedan ( BMW F52 ) with the same drive type that is not available in Europe . The first vehicles were delivered in autumn 2019 and this 1 Series was awarded the Golden Steering Wheel in the compact category.

Model history

As early as 2015 there was information in the press that the successor to the F20-1 series had front-wheel drive.

The manufacturer published the first photos of the vehicle on May 27, 2019, and on the same day the German-language motor press from auto motor und sport and Auto Bild as well as other international (English-speaking and French) motor journalists posted their own presentations and previews on their internet portals and the video platform YouTube uploaded from the manufacturer's premises in the BMW plant in Leipzig. In mid-April 2019, leaks appeared in which parts of the undisguised vehicle (without foiling or camouflage elements of a Erlkönig ) can be seen. Selected journalists, analysts and stakeholders were given the opportunity at the “BMW Group #NEXTGen” presentation event, which featured a partially time-delayed public livestream , from June 25 to 27, 2019 in the BMW Welt closed to visitors (more precisely: driving demonstration with two vehicles in the new vehicle delivery area / event room "Doppelkegel" and later exhibition of a vehicle in the foyer) in Munich . The vehicle was shown to the public for the first time at a vehicle fair at the IAA in September 2019. The global market launch took place on September 28, 2019.

The market launch for the 2 Series Gran Coupé is planned for March 14, 2020 , which is 20 cm longer than the compact model and is also being built in Leipzig.

production

On July 2, 2019, BMW started production of the vehicle at the BMW plant in Leipzig . From November 2019, the BMW 1 Series will also be manufactured at the BMW plant in Regensburg . [outdated]

design

At the time the first photos of the vehicle were published, Domagoj Dukec was head of design for the BMW brand.

Body design

Rear view

The design of the body was created under Sebastian Simm. The headlights converge to a point on both sides, were drawn into the fenders and are in the plane that is parallel to the front of the vehicle (spanned by the vehicle width and vehicle height with zero point in the extended center line of the radiator grille and on the ground; yz plane in one on the front bumper in the middle of the radiator grille and the vehicle coordinate system anchored to the ground ), V-shaped, symmetrically angled. The BMW kidney grille , which like the front bumper can have different design elements in the equipment lines, resembles that of the BMW G20 with the individual elements that have grown together . From the top corner points of the aforementioned, light edges run over the bonnet, there is another pair of arches that starts at the front end of the bonnet and runs towards the A-pillar.

The side line is rising, the roof line is sloping and the side windows, which are framed in black or chrome depending on the equipment variant, taper towards the rear of the vehicle. The designer of the body describes it as a greenhouse (fitted passenger cockpit with vehicle pillars, glazing and roof), which is drawn in to the rear both in height and width. A BMW logo in the C-pillar as in the BMW X2 (F39) was not provided by the design team, since the BMW 1 Series is a volume model , the Hofmeister kink is emphasized by the elongated window graphics and the C-pillar is therefore relatively thin, so only there would be little space left for the logo. Two light edges begin in the front doors: one above the sill, it ends in the rear door in an upward arc, and one below the ironing door handles that ends at the beginning of the rear side wall. The split taillights have an indicated, rounded, lying L-shape. The rear license plate is mounted on the tailgate.

Interior design

Interior view with Live Cockpit Professional

Simon Sebastian was in charge of the interior design. In an interview, he reports that the "quality" of the surfaces should be in the same class as the BMW 3 Series (current model: BMW G20 ) and that the controls should be even closer to the driver.

The vehicle has a standard instrument cluster with analog round instruments for driving speed and engine speed, a 5.1 ″ display as a multifunctional display and segment displays for the fuel gauge and the coolant thermometer. In the center console there is a second, touch-sensitive screen with an 8.8-inch diagonal for the infotainment system, whose functions can also be operated via the iDrive control. On request, the Live Cockpit Professional , which is known from other series, is available with a 10.25 inch screen.

The air conditioning is operated with buttons arranged in a bar under the ventilation nozzles on the center console. Set parameters of the air conditioning system are shown in a segment display that is located between the ventilation nozzles. On the edges of the dashboard there is an additional nozzle for the driver and front passenger.

technology

According to auto, motor und sport, the five-door car is based on the UKL2 - front-wheel drive - platform of BMW, as among other things the BMW 1 notchback sedan (F52) and the Van BMW 2 Series Active Tourer (F45). The British media Autocar and just-auto.com, on the other hand, state that it was developed on a further development of the UKL and UKL2 platform, the FAAR platform. The product manager of the BMW 1 series, Jochen Schmalholz, cites a customer survey as the reason for the change in drive type , in which they asked where they see improvements as possible; the size of the interior was often quoted here. BMW assumes that most customers are more interested in space, driving safety and brand image than in driving dynamics advantages. In addition, a higher level of noise comfort has been ensured.

body

The outside of the vehicle is 4319 mm long, 1799 mm wide and 1434 mm high. The wheelbase is 2670 mm. The frontal area is 2.19 m². It has a drag coefficient (c W ) between 0.26 (118i, 116d, 118d) and 0.34 (M135i xDrive). The curb weight is between 1320 kg (118i) and 1600 kg (M135i xDrive). The luggage compartment volume is 380 liters with the rear seat backrests up, when folded it increases to 1200 liters. Some load-bearing parts are made of high-strength steels , the bonnet and tailgate are made of aluminum. According to BMW, this should have reduced the vehicle mass by up to 30 kg. All models have a boomerang-shaped strut in the rear. The front end and the center tunnel of the M135i xDrive have additional struts.

The tank has a standard volume of 42 liters on the models with front-wheel drive. They have a 50-liter tank for an extra charge, which is standard on the all-wheel drive models. Vehicles with diesel engines have an additional 20.5 liter container with front-wheel drive to hold the aqueous urea solution AUS 32 for the selective catalytic reduction of the exhaust gas, with the 120d xDrive the capacity of the container is reduced to 12 liters.

landing gear

The front suspension consists of MacPherson struts and wishbones . The wheel slip limitation (ARB) close to the actuator is new, with the aim of reducing typical front-wheel drive properties (power understeer); the system is 10 times faster than the usual traction control. The placement of the processing unit in the engine control unit also contributes to this thanks to the short signal paths.

The steering has reduced friction and is supported electromechanically depending on the driving speed. The steering ratio is 15: 1 (M135i xDrive: 14: 1). The car has a multi-link suspension on the rear axle . Optionally there is also a sports suspension (designation from BMW: "M Sportfahrwerk"), in which the body is lowered 10 mm and shock absorbers with two different characteristics that can be selected by the driver (designation from BMW: "adaptive suspension VDC [Variable Damper Control]" ).

Braking system

All models have internally ventilated disc brakes with single-piston floating calipers . For the M135i xDrive there are perforated, grooved brake discs and four-piston fixed callipers from the manufacturer's own "M Performance" accessories for the front axle .

The parking brake is activated electromechanically via a button in the center console.

drive

Engines

Initially, two gasoline and two diesel engines (with three power levels) are to be offered for the vehicle . The motors are installed at the front across the direction of travel.

All engines are turbocharged , have four valves per cylinder and direct fuel injection into the combustion chambers. For exhaust aftertreatment , the petrol engines have catalytic converters and particulate filters , diesel engines diesel particulate filter , nitrogen oxide (NO X ) storage catalysts and selective reduction catalyst (SCR) .

The maximum outputs are: 103 kW (140 PS) for the 118i and 225 kW (306 PS) for the M135i xDrive for the gasoline engines; 85 kW (116 PS) for the 116d, 110 kW (150 PS) for the 118d and 140 kW (190 PS) for the 120d xDrive for the diesel engines.

BMW M135i xDrive

The variants 118i and 116d each have a 1.5-liter rows - three-cylinder engine (engine series: BMW B38 and BMW B37 ); the remaining engines are in-line four-cylinder engines (engine series: BMW B48 and BMW B47 ) with a displacement of two liters each.

The engine of the 120d xDrive is charged in two stages with two turbochargers .

The three-cylinder engines have an exhaust tailpipe on the left and the four-cylinder engines have double- sided tailpipes (one tailpipe on each side of the vehicle). The end pipe diameter of the M135i xDrive is 100 mm, the pipes are bevelled downwards; the remaining models have a diameter of 90 mm.

transmission

In the 118i, 116d and 118d, the power is transferred as standard with a six-speed manual gearbox with a gear ratio spread (= quotient of the shortest to longest gear ratio) between 6.18 and 6.48. For the two three-cylinder engines there is a seven-speed dual clutch transmission (BMW designation: "Steptronic transmission with double clutch") with a gear ratio spread of 7.59 supplied by Magna PT for an extra charge , and an eight- speed automatic transmission for the 118d (BMW designation: "Steptronic transmission ").

The eight-speed automatic transmission with hydrodynamic torque converter with a gear ratio spread of 8.20 is standard in the M135i xDrive (BMW designation: "Steptronic Sport Transmission") and 120d xDrive (BMW designation: "Steptronic Transmission"). It is supplied by Aisin for all engines available with it . As a front axle differential lock, the M135i xDrive has a Torsen differential gear integrated into the transmission with launch control mode and paddle shifters on the steering wheel.

The selector levers of the automatically controlled transmission are connected to it via shift-by-wire . In the basic "ECO PRO" characteristic, the vehicle uses idle coasting during the gliding phases .

Power transmission

While the less powerful versions will only be available with front-wheel drive , the most powerful versions have all-wheel drive (BMW designation: " xDrive ") , regardless of the engine's ignition method . All models have an electronic limited-slip differential (BMW designation: "EDLC"). If the front wheels slip, power on the front axle differential is transferred to the rear wheels via an angular gear (BMW designation: "Power Take-Off") and a two-part cardan shaft directed. The rear wheels are engaged as required, the rear axle drive has an electrohydraulically controlled multi-plate clutch (BMW designation: "Hang on").

safety

Passive safety

Six airbags are standard on all models : front and side airbags for the driver and front passenger, head airbags for the outer front and rear seats. The vehicle has three-point automatic seat belts with belt force limiters and tensioners for the driver and front passenger.

Active security

The vehicle has the driver assistance systems that are common for cars of the 2010s and affect driving stability, anti-lock braking system , traction control (BMW designation: "ASC"), vehicle dynamics control (BMW designation: "DSC" and "DTC") and brake assist (BMW designation: " DBC "). Furthermore, a wheel slip regulator through the engine control (manufacturer's designation: “Aktornahe Radschlupfbegrenzung” / “ARB”) and an Active Yaw Control (torque distribution, BMW designation: “BMW Performance Control”) are standard in all models .

Other driver assistance systems are front collion warning, lane departure warning and attention assistant (standard); Adaptive cruise control is available for a surcharge , a package called "Driving Assistant" by BMW with lane change assistant , cross traffic warning , a rear-end system for preventing rear-end collisions, display of traffic signs in the instrument cluster; a parking assistant, parking aid front and rear, reversing assistant, reversing camera and high beam assistant.

lighting

The headlights are standard halogen headlamps and have LED - daytime running lights ; the lights of the rear lights, with the exception of the reversing light and the rear fog light , which have LED technology, are light bulbs .

Both levels of LED headlights and taillights are available for an extra charge, the first only includes the lights themselves, the second adds glare-reduced high beam , adaptive cornering light and motorway light .

There are also LED fog lights in the bumper for the vehicle .

Furnishing

The vehicle will be offered in five equipment variants: They have the names "Advantage", "Sport Line", "Luxury Line", "M Sport" and "M135i xDrive". The "Advantage" variant is based on the basic equipment, the following have equipment scopes that supplement or differ from the "Advantage" variant.

The design of the bumpers and the color of the add-on parts differ externally in the equipment variants. The BMW kidney grille of the M135i xDrive has a grid structure ("mesh") instead of the vertical bars of the other BMW 1-series models.

bikes

Except for the 116d, which has steel wheels as standard, all models have light alloy wheels . The smallest available rim diameter for the wheels is 16 inches, the largest is 19 inches for an extra charge. A total of eight wheel designs are offered.

Colors and upholstery

With the market launch, two solid and nine metallic paints will be offered for the body. There are eight upholstery materials for the interior, two of which are fabric covers, three leather covers and three combinations of fabric and synthetic leather (BMW designation: "Sensatec").

Interior

The optional equipment package “Business Package Professional” is a navigation system with the infotainment system (BMW name: “BMW Live Cockpit Professional”) in the center console instead of the 8.8 ″ screen and a digital instrument cluster instead Instrument cluster with analog displaying instruments, each having a 10.25 ″ screen. The engine speed in the BMW Live Cockpit Professional is displayed in the instrument cluster in an analogue counterclockwise direction.

The navigation system is also included in the “Business Package Plus” special equipment, but it has the smaller screen and the analogue display instrument cluster (BMW designation: “BMW Live Cockpit Plus”) from the basic equipment. The navigation instructions and other content can be projected onto the windshield in color using a 9.2-inch head-up display for an extra charge . A panoramic glass roof is available on request. The front part can be pushed open and lifted , and when pushed it moves outwards over the fixed rear element. The decorative strips in the dashboard and the doors are illuminated / backlit from the inside as special equipment.
