The BMW M3 DTM is a prototype racing car from the German car manufacturer BMW , which is optically based on the E92 series . The racing car is designed for exclusive use in the DTM and competed there from the 2012 season against the Audi A5 and the C-Coupé from Mercedes . Already in the debut season, the vehicle won both the drivers 'and the teams' championships in the DTM.

For BMW, the E92 is the first prototype racing car in the DTM. As the company with the end of season 1992 from the German Touring Car Championship got out, there were still touring cars of Group A used in which essential components, such as a mainly made of sheet metal body came from the automotive series.

technology

The M3 DTM is based only optically on the coupé version of the BMW M3. The construction consists of a CFK - monocoque chassis with integrated 120-liter fuel tank.

The four-valve, naturally aspirated V8 engine has a displacement of four liters, a cylinder opening angle of 90 degrees and develops around 480 hp (353 kW). The maximum torque is around 500 Nm. The engine accelerates the car to 100 km / h in around three seconds and reaches a top speed of 300 km / h. Due to the regulations, two air flow limiters with a diameter of 28 mm each are installed. Power is transmitted via a sequential 6-speed sports transmission with pneumatic actuation via shift paddles on the steering wheel and a 4-disc CFRP clutch from ZF Sachs . In addition, the car has an adjustable multi-disc limited slip differential.

Front and rear wheels are individually suspended on double wishbones with compression struts and six-way adjustable shock absorbers, plus internally ventilated carbon-ceramic brake discs and monoblock brake calipers made of light metal. The brake force distribution of the hydraulic dual-circuit brake system can be continuously adjusted by the driver. The 18-inch forged aluminum wheels are standard components, 12 inches wide on the front axle and 13 inches on the rear axle.

tires

The tires come from the standard supplier Hankook . In 2012 the tires were enlarged compared to the previous season . The front tire now had a width of 300 millimeters and a diameter of 680 millimeters, the rear tire was 320 millimeters wide and 710 millimeters in diameter. The tires had wing elements on the sidewalls for additional downforce.

Teams and drivers

In 2012 the teams Racing Bart Mampaey (RBM), Reinhold Motorsport (RMG) and Schnitzer Motorsport started with two drivers each. BMW nominated Augusto Farfus , Andy Priaulx , Dirk Werner and Joey Hand as well as the former Mercedes-Benz factory driver Bruno Spengler and the reigning DTM champion Martin Tomczyk , who is coming from Audi .

Team MTEK was added in 2013, with drivers Timo Glock and Marco Wittmann . Besides a swap of the places of Joey Hand and Andy Priaulx, there were no other changes.
