BMW 3200 Michelotti Vignale in side view
The BMW 3200 Michelotti Vignale is a design study by the Italian designer Giovanni Michelotti based on the BMW 507 .
Vehicle characteristics
Giovanni Michelotti was guided by US American tastes of the late 1950s when he designed the body of the BMW 3200 Michelotti Vignale. Sergio Scaglietti made the shell, the model was assembled by the Turin-based coachbuilder Vignale . In contrast to the curved series model, the 3200 Michelotti Vignale is angular with straight lines and indicated fins. The prototype sat on the chassis of a BMW 507 with chassis number 70184.
The red-brown metallic painted prototype with hardtop was presented at the Turin Motor Show from October 31 to November 11, 1959 .
When the vehicle was auctioned off at Christie's on April 21, 1986 , it was discovered that it was owned by the Earl of Chichester from 1980 to 1986 . The 3200 Michelotti Vignale was acquired by the US collector Oscar Davis for 50,760 pounds , who had it restored and painted red. Presumably in 2001 the Blackhawk Museum bought it , in whose collection it was until the end of 2004, before BMW Classic took over the car.
