Sergio Scaglietti (born January 9, 1920 in Modena ; † November 20, 2011 there ) was an Italian automobile designer and entrepreneur . The Carrozzeria Scaglietti , which he founded, was closely associated with the sports car manufacturer Ferrari .
Life
Sergio Scaglietti completed an apprenticeship as an automobile mechanic in a small Modenese workshop in the early 1930s . As early as 1937, he made first contacts with Enzo Ferrari , who at the time ran the Scuderia Ferrari in Modena , a racing team that used Alfa Romeo vehicles . Scaglietti's employer was repeatedly entrusted by Ferrari with the repair or rebuilding of damaged racing cars.
After the Second World War , Scaglietti started his own car repair shop in Maranello . The Carrozzeria Scaglietti, founded in 1951, was based in the immediate vicinity of the Ferrari factory. After Scaglietti had initially only taken on repair work for Ferrari, Scaglietti built a complete body for a Ferrari chassis for the first time in the mid-1950s. This work was soon followed by other orders from Ferrari. First Sergio Scaglietti designed the bodies himself. Scaglietti's most famous creations include the Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa . In addition to the work for Ferrari, which soon became the focus of Scaglietti's activities, he designed some bodies for Alfa Romeo, Maserati and Stanguellini ; but they remained mostly unique pieces.
Later the plant focused on the serial production of bodies designed by other designers. In the 1960s, most of the Ferrari bodies were made in Scaglietti's workshops; Scaglietti had become Ferrari's preferred body supplier. The designs were now based in many cases on the work of Pininfarina . The car that Scaglietti valued the most was the Ferrari 275 GTB .
In 1975 Scaglietti sold his company to Ferrari. The Italian sports car manufacturer continued the production of bodies in Scaglietti's plant. In honor of Sergio Scaglietti, the Ferrari 612 presented in 2004 was given the nickname "Scaglietti".
Sergio Scaglietti died on November 20, 2011 at the age of 91.
