Coat of Arms of the Earls of Chichester (third award)

Earl of Chichester is a hereditary British title of nobility created twice in the Peerage of England and once in the Peerage of the United Kingdom .

Awards, subordinate and other titles

The title was first created on June 3, 1644 in the Peerage of England for Francis Leigh, 1st Baron Dunsmore . The title was given a special note that in the absence of male descendants of its own, it could also be passed on to his son-in-law Thomas Wriothesley, 4th Earl of Southampton , and his male descendants. As early as July 31, 1628, Leigh had been raised to Baron Dunsmore , of Dunsmore in the County of Warwick , with a special note in favor of his stepson Sir John Anderson, 1st Baronet. When Francis Leigh died in 1653 without sons of his own, the title of baron expired because his stepson had died in 1630, and the title of earl fell according to the special note to Thomas Wriothesley, who was already 4th Earl of Southampton . Both earl titles expired on his death in 1667.

In the second bestowal, the title was bestowed on September 10, 1675 in the Peerage of England for Charles FitzRoy , an illegitimate son of King Charles II , along with the titles of Duke of Southampton and Baron Newbury , in the County of Berks . In 1709 he inherited the titles Duke of Cleveland , Earl of Southampton and Baron Nonsuch created in 1670 from his mother . The titles expired on the death of his son, the 3rd Duke of Cleveland, in 1774.

In the third award, the title was awarded on June 23, 1801 in the Peerage of the United Kingdom to Thomas Pelham, 2nd Baron Pelham . From a second nephew of Thomas Pelham-Holles, 1st Duke of Newcastle-upon-Tyne , he had inherited the title of Baron Pelham , of Stanmer in the County of Sussex , as early as 1768 . Today's title holder is his descendant John Pelham as 9th Earl.
