Baron Pelham is a hereditary British title of nobility , which was awarded once in the Peerage of England and in the Peerage of Great Britain .

Awards

For the first time on December 16, 1706 in the Peerage of England, the title Baron Pelham , of Laughton , was created for Sir Thomas Pelham, 4th Baronet .

His son, the 2nd Baron, was raised to Earl of Clare and Viscount Haughton in 1714 , and Duke of Newcastle-upon-Tyne and Marquess of Clare in 1715 . These awards took place in the Peerage of Great Britain and with the special addition that the titles, in the absence of male descendants of his own, could also be passed on to his brother Henry Pelham (1696–1754) and his male descendants. Because he himself remained childless and his brother Henry also died in 1854, leaving behind only daughters, it was foreseeable that all of his titles would expire upon his death. Against this background, he was awarded the title Duke of Newcastle-under-Lyne in the Peerage of Great Britain in 1756 , with a special addition in favor of Henry Clinton, 9th Earl of Lincoln , the husband of his niece Catherine, the eldest daughter of his late brother Henry Pelham, and his male descendants.

He was also given the title Baron Pelham , of Stanmer in the County of Sussex , in the Peerage of Great Britain on May 4, 1762 , with a special note in favor of his second uncle, Thomas Pelham.

On his death on November 17, 1768, the title of Baron Pelham, of Laughton, expired from 1706 and his titles from 1714 and 1715. The title Duke of Newcastle-under-Lyne fell to the 9th Earl of Lincoln , the Barony of Pelham, of Stanmer, fell to Thomas Pelham. The latter was also elevated to Earl of Chichester in 1801 . The barony has since been a subordinate title of the respective earl.
