The title was first awarded on November 2, 1624 in the Peerage of England by King James I to the former Member of Parliament for Nottinghamshire John Holles, 1st Baron Haughton . He had already been given the subordinate title Baron Haughton , of Haughton in the County of Nottingham, on July 9, 1616 . His great-grandson, the 4th Earl, was also elevated to Duke of Newcastle-upon-Tyne and Marquess of Clare on May 14, 1694 . Since he left no sons, all four titles lapsed when he died on July 15, 1711.

In the second award, the title was newly created on October 19, 1714 together with the subordinate title Viscount Haughton in the Peerage of Great Britain for Thomas Pelham-Holles, 2nd Baron Pelham . He was a nephew of the late 4th Earl's first bestowal. On August 11, 1715, he was also awarded the title Duke of Newcastle upon Tyne and Marquess of Clare . All awards were made with the special addition that, in the absence of male descendants of his own, the titles could also be passed on to his brother Henry Pelham (1696–1754) and his male descendants. In 1712 he had inherited the title 2nd Baron Pelham , of Laughton, created for his father in 1706 in the Peerage of England . Since he himself remained childless and his brother died in 1754 and only left daughters, the titles expired on his death on November 17, 1768.

The third award of the title was on June 12, 1795 in the Peerage of Ireland to John FitzGibbon, 1st Viscount FitzGibbon . In the Peerage of Ireland he had already been awarded the title of Baron FitzGibbon , of Lower Connello in the County of Limerick on July 6, 1789 , and the title of Viscount FitzGibbon , of Limerick in the County of Limerick, on December 6, 1793 . On September 24, 1799 he was also raised to Baron FitzGibbon , of Sidbury in the County of Devon in the Peerage of Great Britain . All his title extinguished upon the death of his younger son, the third Earl, on January 10, 1864, because its only son John FitzGibbon, Viscount FitzGibbon in 1854 as a Lieutenant of the 8th Hussars in the Charge of the Light Brigade in the Battle of Balaklava had fallen.
