The BMW Z4 (internal: E89 ) is a roadster produced by the German car manufacturer BMW from 2009 to 2016 .

Model history

It is the second generation of the BMW Z4 and thus the further development of the BMW E85 . The model was presented on December 13, 2008 and was first accessible to the public at NAIAS 2009. Sales began worldwide on May 9, 2009. In July 2016 there was no official information about the successor being developed. There will be a period during which no roadster will be offered by BMW. This was also the case when the first generation ( E85 ) was switched to the one described here. The Z4 will continue to be marketed in China.

In 2017, BMW showed a concept study with a fabric roof for the successor at the Concours d'Elegance in Pebble Beach and at the IAA .

Facelift

  • In autumn 2011, the two 6-cylinder models sDrive23i and sDrive30i were replaced by two new 4-cylinder models with twin-scroll turbochargers (sDrive20i and sDrive28i).
  • From March 2012 it was possible to open and close the roof up to a speed of 40 km / h (there was no reinforced roof hydraulics).
  • In March 2013, the Z4 received slightly modified headlights, which now have an LED strip, as well as modified side lights for the indicators. The range of motors has been expanded downwards with the sDrive18i.
    • In addition, the equipment packages “Design Pure Balance” and “Design Pure Traction” came, each of which could be combined with the M-Sport package. The thematically and color-coordinated interior packages each included new trim strips and seat covers. In addition, the surrounds of the ventilation nozzles and the “control panel” were made of glossy, black plastic. In addition, the haptics and acoustic feedback of some buttons and switches have been qualitatively upgraded.
    • In addition to the option of ordering the hardtop in a contrasting color to the body (black or silver), from March 2013 BMW offered the paint finish “Valencia Orange metallic” for the Z4.
  • From July 2015, the paint finish “Estoril blue metallic” could be selected in conjunction with the M-Sport package.

Design and production

The E89, which was designed by Juliane Blasi and Nadya Arnaout (the latter for the interior), was not manufactured at the BMW US Manufacturing Company's plant in Greer ( Spartanburg County ) like its predecessor , but at the BMW plant in Regensburg .

Production in Regensburg officially ended on August 22, 2016. A total of 116,045 copies of the Z4 E89 were produced.

technology

Since the new Z4 now got a foldable hardtop , it replaced the roadster and coupé versions of its predecessor. The two-part, electrohydraulically retractable hardtop in lightweight aluminum shell construction can be opened and closed fully automatically in 20 seconds. With the roof open, the trunk volume is 180 liters (closed: 310 l).

A six-speed sports automatic transmission with Steptronic was offered for the 23i and 30i models . A 6-speed manual transmission was installed as standard. The new 7-speed dual clutch transmission was used on the 35i and the top-of-the-range 35is , although the 35i was also available with a 6-speed manual transmission.

The Z4 now had driving dynamics control as standard . At the touch of a button, the characteristics of the throttle response, shift behavior in variants with automatic transmission, power steering and DSC tuning can be adjusted in three stages (normal, sport, sport +). With the optional adaptive M suspension, the damper characteristics are also activated.

An electric parking brake is used in the E89 .

It is the first roadster from BMW to use the iDrive system.

In contrast to its predecessor, it is 148 mm longer, 9 mm wider and 8 mm lower. The track width has increased by 47 mm. The weight has increased by 95 kg, of which only 30 kg are caused by the new roof concept, as the roof shells are made of aluminum. The remaining weight increase results from the larger dimensions, a stiffer body and modified standard equipment (e.g. 17 ″ wheels, bi-xenon headlights, etc.).

Engines

All engines are equipped with double VANOS . With the exception of the sDrive35i (s), all motor variants also have Valvetronic . The sDrive35i and 35is have two turbochargers ( Twin Turbo ) and have been converted to spray-guided direct injection ( High Precision Injection ). The four-cylinder engines have a combination of Valvetronic, spray-guided direct injection and turbocharging . The Z4 has EfficientDynamics . All BMW Z4 models have been compliant with the EU6 emissions standard since 2014 .

safety

All BMW Z4s have the following safety equipment as standard: In addition to ABS including brake assist and cornering brake control , belt tensioners and belt force limiters as well as ESP with traction control are available. There are also four airbags (driver / front passenger and two side airbags). The dynamic brake light shows how hard the vehicle is being braked. In the event of an emergency braking, the brake light is activated to flash and the hazard warning lights are switched on shortly before the vehicle comes to a standstill. To protect against rollover, two fixed roll bars are installed behind the headrests.

"Mille miglia" special model

On the occasion of the 2010 Mille Miglia in Italy, BMW Italia presented the special “mille miglia” model of the BMW Z4 35is. While the technology remained largely unchanged, the following changes were made to the vehicles in a company specializing in conversions in Turin :

  • "Polar silver matt" paintwork (reminiscent of a popular BMW color from the 1970s).
  • The seats have black Alcantara equipment with red cross stitching. The steering wheel also has a red stitching. A carpet set with a red seam is also included.
  • The wheels are standard wheels from the Z4 (code 296) with a special anthracite-colored paint finish.
  • The lower cross strut in the front spoiler is black, as is the rear apron.
  • 3 Mille-Miglia badges were attached to the outside. Inside there is a mille miglia badge with the number on the front shelf.
  • Since these are vehicles intended for Italy, they are not equipped with heated seats.

Zagato Coupe

BMW Z4 Zagato Coupe

At the Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este 2012, BMW presented the Zagato Coupé based on the Z4, which, according to Andrea Zagato, should represent a Vmax concept, i.e. a road-legal, but technically optimized vehicle. The vehicle had a slightly lower body and better equipment than the starting point.

Awards

  • International Design Excellence Award (IDEA) 2009 from the Industrial Designers Society of America (IDSA)
  • Winner of "The sportiest cars 2009" of the trade magazine "sport auto" in the convertibles category up to 40,000 euros (z4 sDrive23i)
  • Eyes on Design Award at the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) 2009
  • red dot design award 2009
  • Internet Auto Award 2009 in the " Cabriolets " class

Advertising campaign

In November 2008, the South African street artist Robin Rhode used the tires of the BMW Z4 instead of a brush and had the roadster painted shapes in bright colors on a canvas. Jake Scott was the director. A total of 190 liters of special paint were sprayed directly onto the vehicle tires via 4 nozzles per Z4. Robin Rhode was able to control the spray nozzles via a remote control. This campaign called "An Expression of Joy" was used to launch the new BMW Z4 Roadster worldwide.
