BMW is the main brand for passenger cars in the BMW Group , which also includes the two car brands Mini and Rolls-Royce . The same brand is used for the motorcycles built since 1923 .
Until the end of the First World War
The driving force behind the founding of the BMW car brand was Franz Josef Popp , a graduate engineer who worked for the AEG Union in Vienna. The AEG Union applied for aircraft engine construction at the outbreak of World War I, after the Oesterreichische Daimler-Motoren-AG ( Austro-Daimler ) commissioned with the project could not raise sufficient capacity. That is why the AEG Union Vienna sent its engineer Popp to the Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft (DMG) in Stuttgart and to the NAG ( National Automobile Society ) in Berlin-Oberschöneweide, which had just been awarded the Kaiser Prize for aero engines created in 1912 . The start of the production of aircraft engines failed due to the availability of machine tools.
Popp, now a reserve officer of the Austro-Hungarian Navy , recognized the lack of suitable aircraft engines and beat the Austrian navy the license of the 350 hp Austro-Daimler engine at the Rapp-Motorenwerke in Clemensstrasse in Munich. This comparatively small engine factory had been building aircraft engines since 1913, but the Prussian, Bavarian or Austrian army administrations did not take into account when awarding the contract. However, the Austrian Navy trusted the expertise of its officer Popp and sent him to Munich to supervise the commissioned production of 224 Austro-Daimler engines.
Popp, who was dissatisfied with the commercial and technical management of Rapp-Motorenwerke, recruited the designer Max Friz, whom he personally knew, from DMG in Stuttgart and eventually took over the management of the company, which was also renamed Bayrische Motorenwerke GmbH .
At DMG, Max Friz designed the engine for the Mercedes racing car, which won the French Grand Prix ( 1914 ), and was already involved in the construction of aircraft engines at Daimler. Popp was now able to convince the inspection of the air troops (IdFlieg) with the aircraft engine BMW IIIa newly designed by Max Friz , which with the same installation dimensions clearly exceeded the tried and tested 160 hp Mercedes D III engine and with an order of initially 600, a little later even 1,000 engines expand production.
On August 13, 1918, the GmbH was converted into a stock corporation with 12 million marks in share capital , Popp was appointed sole member of the board and the previous shareholders were financially compensated. The order for the production of aircraft engines was expanded to 3500 units, which resulted in the company moving to the edge of what was then the Oberwiesenfeld airfield with the construction of extensive new factory buildings. BMW engines have now also been built under license from the Deutz gas engine factory in Cologne and from Opel in Rüsselsheim.
The armistice in 1918 put an end to the steep rise of the company, which had risen from a relatively small bankrupt Rapp-Motoren-Werk to one of the largest aircraft engine manufacturers with 3,500 employees.
Between the world wars
According to the provisions of the Peace Treaty of Versailles , the German Reich was no longer allowed to develop or manufacture any war-relevant products - including aircraft engines. In Germany, aircraft could only be built again from 1924.
At BMW in Munich, Max Friz therefore initially turned to the development of marine engines, a 60 hp truck engine with heavy oil carburetor and a 500 cm³ two-cylinder boxer engine , which was first installed at Victoria and then at the Helios works .
The Berlin-based Knorr-Bremse AG was looking for a location in Bavaria where they could manufacture compressed air brakes for the wagons of the Bavarian Railway Administration in accordance with the contract . In June 1919, Knorr-Bremse signed a license agreement with Bayerische Motoren-Werke AG for the construction of parts for Kunze-Knorr brakes . In May 1920, the sole owner sold Camillo Castiglioni the Bayerische Motoren Werke AG to the shareholder syndicate of the Knorr-Bremse AG , BMW was - the new production focus accordingly - in Süddeutsche brake AG renamed ( "Südbremse"). With a contract dated May 20, 1922, the engine construction department, which was of little interest to the new owner, went into Castiglioni's possession together with the BMW company . He brought both of these to the company he had called Bayerische Flugzeugwerke AG (BFW AG, until 1916 Gustav Otto Flugmaschinenwerke ), which had focused on the construction of engines for various purposes and whose factories were only a few hundred meters away. In the course of the restructuring in 1922, the (first) BFW AG was renamed Bayerische Motorenwerke AG . Therefore, March 7, 1916, the day on which the (first) Bayerische Flugzeugwerke AG was entered in the commercial register, is the date of foundation of today's BMW Group. Another (second) Bayerische Flugzeugwerke AG was founded in 1923 and renamed Messerschmitt AG in 1938 .
The first BMW motorcycle, the R 32 with an air-cooled 500 cm³ two-cylinder boxer engine, appeared in 1923. The further developments of the construction with a double tubular frame and cardan drive were to endure well after the Second World War. With the takeover of the Eisenach vehicle factory in 1928, the opportunity arose to build on the successful small car construction of the traditional Wartburg brand, which was discontinued in 1903 , with the Dixi model . In 1929, BMW produced the BMW 3/15 PS in Eisenach, the first vehicles as license replicas of the Austin Seven . Soon, however, it was possible to break away from licensed production and at the beginning of 1932 brought the BMW 3/20, newly designed by Friz, with an 800 cc four-cylinder engine onto the market. Its central tubular frame had pivot axles at the front and rear .
The 30 hp BMW 303 presented in 1933 , the first BMW vehicle with a six-cylinder engine and a kidney grille , was followed in 1934 by the BMW 315 (40 hp), in 1935 by the BMW 319 (55 hp), in 1936 by the BMW 326 with double carburetor and in 1937 by the most popular and successful two-seater of its time, the BMW 328 with a 2-liter engine, triple carburetor and 80 hp. In 1939 the Brandenburgische Motorenwerke GmbH (Bramo) was taken over. Due to the war, in 1940 all German manufacturers had to stop manufacturing private cars. BMW concentrated its core business on aircraft engines and the manufacture of motorcycles for motorcyclists in the Wehrmacht .
After the Second World War
In the former Eisenach plant , now located in the GDR , production was still under the BMW logo after nationalization until 1951, then as the Eisenach engine plant (EMW). Here the BMW / EMW 327 and the newly developed BMW / EMW 340 rolled off the assembly line, the latter already without a double kidney. The Wartburg 311 was produced there from 1956 .
After the war in 1951, vehicle production at the main plant in Munich restarted with the BMW 501 with some delays. The bodies had to be supplied by the partner company Baur from Stuttgart. In addition, the models BMW 502 , 503, 507 and 3200 CS (called Bertone Coupé) were produced in the 1950s . These heavy wagons were technically demanding, but also relatively expensive and did not sell to the necessary extent. BMW was somewhat more successful during this time with the small cars 600 , 700 and Isetta , but in a persistent economic crisis. In 1960, the major shareholder Herbert Quandt , at that time chairman of the board of the battery manufacturer VARTA , succeeded in implementing a restructuring plan at the shareholders' meeting, acquiring the majority of the shares with considerable equity and reviving the car market with a new model concept.
With the introduction of the so-called " New Class " in 1961, the model designation of the individual vehicles was given in cc, in some cases (e.g. BMW E3 ) also in liters. This practice also proved itself with the 02 series up to the introduction of the first 5 series (BMW 520 / 520i) in 1972. The designation BMW 5 series stood for a reorganization within the passenger car program, which was attributed to the then marketing director Bob Lutz goes back. As a result, this type of model designation ( 3 , 6 , 7 ) was transferred to the entire portfolio .
In these vehicles, the first number in the three-digit model name stands for the class, the two following for the cubic capacity. The first vehicle according to this classification, the BMW 520 , was a 5-series vehicle with a displacement of 2.0 liters. Often one or more letters such as B. "i" for "Injection" = injection engine or "l" for an extended wheelbase. Today, however, there are no longer any engines with carburettors at BMW , and the “i” is reserved for the petrol-powered models of a series. A "d" after the type code stands for a diesel engine , a "C" for coupé or convertible and an "x" for all-wheel drive , which BMW calls XDrive .
Since the introduction of the "520" (read: five-twenty), the nomenclature for BMW models has consisted of the numbers "3" , "5" and "7" as the designation for " lower middle class " (later middle class ), " upper middle class " and " upper class " and the added two digits for the displacement. Coupé series received the "6" , later also "8" . Roadsters and sports coupes derived from them are referred to as Z models.
From 2000, sport utility vehicles (SUV) marked with an "X" came into the range. So far these are the "X1" , "X2" , "X3" , "X4" , "X5" , the " X6 " and more recently the " X7 ". The even-numbered versions are so-called "Sports Activity Coupés" (name of BMW), with the X6 being the first vehicle of its kind.
In August 2004, the range was expanded to include the “1” for a model in the compact class , after the first compact model had been derived from the 3 series in 1994 . From the 1 Series, there were later also coupé and convertible . With the model change in 2013, the latter were referred to as 2 series.
Since 2014, BMW has been offering compact vans within the 2 series that share the front-wheel drive platform with the Mini: the Active and the Gran Tourer . The latter can be ordered with an additional bench on request, which was obviously well received (chosen by 73 percent of customers).
The 3 series E30 was very successful from 1982 with approx. 2.3 million vehicles or the 7 series E32 presented in 1986 , which was offered for the first time with a V12 engine. In the E28 and E30 series, there was also the 325e / 525e model series . The "e" stands for "eta", the physical symbol for the efficiency . The eta engine was designed in such a way that it consumed less petrol by means of low speed and high torque , but did not offer the typical BMW engine characteristics that BMW drivers had hoped for. Therefore, fewer units of the 325e and 525e were sold, which makes it a rather rare model variant.
With the presentation of the E28 524td , powered by the self-developed six-cylinder in-line diesel engine with swirl chamber injection BMW M21 at the Frankfurt International Motor Show , the company entered diesel technology in 1983.
In 2000 there was the 12-cylinder BMW M73 engine as a variant that could also be operated with hydrogen; it has hydrogen injection valves in the intake tract and a special electronic mixture formation system. This engine produced 15 750hL , which were also used at the Expo 2000. In 2007, the next generation BMW Hydrogen 7 was ready for series production and was also produced in a limited edition of 100 at the BMW plant in Dingolfing .
The BMW Concept 7 Series ActiveHybrid celebrated its premiere as the first mild hybrid from BMW at the Paris Motor Show in October 2008 and went into series production around the end of 2009 as the BMW Active Hybrid 7 . At that time, BMW stopped the subject of engines with direct hydrogen combustion. However, in 2015 BMW showed the BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo with fuel cell from Toyota , with which BMW is now cooperating. A small test fleet of four vehicles was built from this vehicle. Active hybrid technology was offered in the 5 Series in 2011 and also in the 3 Series a year later .
In January 2010 (at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit) the BMW ActiveE , which belongs to the BMW i sub-brand , was shown based on the 1 Series Coupé . Its electric motor as well as the battery and motor control were also used in 2013 in the all-electric BMW i3 , which was also the first series vehicle with a passenger cell made of carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP). The electric motor for the drive was developed by BMW itself and is produced at the Landshut plant. 100,000 BMW i3s had been produced by October 2017. BMW presented the plug-in hybrid sports car BMW i8 at the IAA 2013 , which has also been available as a roadster since May 2018. Since March 2016 the plug-in hybrids from BMW have been available in the respective model series under the name "e iPerformance" . The all-electric BMW Concept iX3 was presented at Auto China 2018 in Beijing . Its 200 kW / 270 PS electric motor manages without rare earths .

BMW X models
The BMW X models are Sport Utility Vehicles (SUV; called “SAV” for “Sports Activity Vehicle”) from BMW .
At the end of 1999, BMW expanded its model range to include the X5 , which, like the BMW Z3, was manufactured at the Spartanburg plant in Greer (USA) and was also mainly intended for the American market. Two years earlier, Mercedes-Benz had presented the M-Class and it was a great success. However, the ML was based on a ladder frame, while the X5 has a self-supporting body. Coupled with permanent all-wheel drive and dynamic design, the BMW X5 became one of the most popular SUVs in Europe too, available with 6- and 8-cylinder petrol engines and the 3.0-liter in-line six-cylinder diesel. In 2002 came the sporty 8-cylinder version 4.6is with 347 hp, which was originally developed together with Alpina.
In the late summer of 2003 the X5 received a facelift with slight changes in the front design and more powerful engines. The 4.6is became the 4.8is with 360 hp. In addition, the X5 received the new all-wheel drive system xDrive , which can variably distribute the drive power between the drive axles and which works with DSC etc.
At the beginning of 2007 the X5 was reissued. Its successor has grown and offers space for up to seven passengers, which is guaranteed with an optional third row of seats. This should create a greater gap to the X3, and it should also draw level with the M-Class from Mercedes, which also offers this function.
In autumn 2003, BMW provided the X5 with a more compact version: the BMW X3 . The range of engines is limited to three petrol engines (four and six cylinders) and four diesels (four and six cylinders), with a maximum displacement of three liters, including the twin turbo diesel with 286 hp, which is also the top engine . Like all four-wheel drive vehicles from BMW, it is equipped with the all-wheel drive system xDrive (xDrive is based on a controllable multi-plate clutch for power distribution). The X3 was built at Magna-Steyr in Graz (Austria) until mid-2010 .
A third model was added to the X series in mid-2008: the BMW X6 , a four-door X5 crossover with a coupé character, which is primarily intended for the American market. Since 2009 there has been an M variant for the first time among the X models (X5M and X6M). The second generation of the X5 (F15) and X6 (F16) came in 2013 and 2014 respectively.
The fourth model in the X series has been available since October 2009: the BMW X1 (E84). It was produced in the BMW plant in Leipzig and in the BMW Brilliance plant in Tiexi. The other models in the X series (X3, X5 and X6) are built by BMW US Manufacturing Company .
In 2014, the X3 was also accompanied by an X4 coupé variant . It was manufactured in the BMW plant in Spartanburg and, since 2016, in the Brazilian BMW plant in Araquari.
The 2nd generation of the BMW X1 (F48) started in 2016 . It is produced in the BMW plant in Regensburg and in the Nedcar plant in Born .
The market launch of the small SUV coupe BMW X2 (F39) was in March 2018 . At the end of April, the all-electric BMW Concept iX3 with 200 kW / 270 PS was presented at Auto China 2018 in Beijing . The X-Coupés were also often preceded by studies - BMW calls them Concept - see (from 2007)
BMW Z models
At BMW, certain roadsters or sports coupes are designated as Z models . The first model to have a “Z” in its name was the BMW Z1 , launched in spring 1989 , which attracted a lot of attention primarily because of its retractable doors in the side sill. Its relatively high price for a six-cylinder roadster, partly due to the fact that it was handcrafted, and its tight cockpit and the limited number of 8,000 vehicles, gave it a certain exclusivity.
At the end of 1995 the very successful BMW Z3 followed , which (like the X5 and Z4 later) was manufactured in the specially built new plant in Greer (South Carolina) in the USA . The Z3 was available with four and six cylinder engines and was technically based largely on the 3 series (E36). The Z3 Roadster owes its success above all to its design with slight retro influences towards the 507 . The Z3 Coupé, which appeared in the summer of 1998, did not achieve large numbers with its shooting brake concept. Both model versions were also available in sports versions as M-Roadster and M-Coupé with a 321 hp (later 325 hp) in-line six-cylinder.
From the beginning of 2000 to mid-2003, BMW produced the exclusive Z8 roadster , which even before its market launch was allowed to serve as a bond car in The World Is Not Enough . The Z8 stood out both inside and out with its retro design by Henrik Fisker , which borrowed from the 507 even more than the Z3 before . Its chassis was based on parts of the 5 and 7 series, but it received a body in aluminum spaceframe construction (similar to the Audi A8 ). Its engine came from the M5 ( E39 ), a 4.9-liter V8 with 294 kW (400 hp). In view of its high price (235,000 DM when it was introduced), the Z8 was adequately equipped, but operating the convertible top was cumbersome and it was only available with a six-speed gearbox, which cost it sales particularly in the USA. Alpina filled this gap in 2003 with the Roadster V8, a more comfort-oriented version of the Z8 equipped with automatic.
At the end of 2002, the BMW Z4 (E85) came as the successor to the Z3. Positioned higher, with the new BMW design and initially only available with a six-cylinder, it lags slightly behind the sales expectations and cannot really assert itself against the cheaper Mazda MX-5 , the Mercedes SLK equipped with a steel folding roof and the Porsche Boxster . A four-cylinder (2.0i) is pushed in. In the spring of 2006, the Z4 received a facelift, which was joined by the new edition of the Z3 Coupé: the Z4 Coupé, which was presented as a study at the 2005 IAA . In addition, M GmbH put two other models on the market: the Z4 M Roadster and the Z4 M Coupé. The new derivatives have been driven from which the M3 ( E46 known) 3.2-liter straight-six-cylinder engine, the 253 kW (343 hp) at 7900 min -1 mobilized.
From the beginning of 2009 to August 2016, the BMW E89 was produced as the successor to the E85. 2017 was u. a. at the IAA the third generation of the Z4, internal designation BMW G29 , shown as a concept . According to its designer Calvin Luk, the front of the car should be inspired by the Z8.
All BMW Z models have the engine in front of the bulkhead and the drive on the rear axle .
BMW M GmbH
BMW M GmbH, a wholly-owned subsidiary of BMW, is responsible for the development and production of the particularly sporty “M models”. The models M2 , M3 , M4 , M5 , M6 , BMW X5 M and BMW X6 M are currently available . In addition to these M models, M GmbH is also responsible for the so-called "M-Performance models", each of which is the sportiest BMW AG model in the series, without being as sporty as the "M models". The current models are the M140i , M240i , X4 M40i , M550d , X5 M50d , X6 M50d and M760Li. For almost all other BMW models, M GmbH offers the M Sport package, which includes special rims or a sports chassis , for example . In addition, “M-Performance” tuning parts are offered, such as performance enhancements, spoilers or Alcantara applications for the interior.
M GmbH also offers the "BMW Individual" options for some BMWs and accepts special requests for the "Individual Manufactory".

Isetta (100, 101, 102, 103) |
A scooter that saved Bayerische Motorenwerke from the red. The manufacturer called the vehicle, to be classified between a motorcycle and a car, a "motocoupé". During the Second World War, BMW mainly built motorcycles and aircraft engines in the two Munich plants. After the end of the war in 1945, car production could not be resumed because the BMW automobile plant in Eisenach, located in the Soviet occupation zone, became part of the Soviet joint-stock company Awtowelo. Vehicle production at BMW began in 1948 with motorcycles. The first car newly developed by BMW after the war and manufactured from 1952, the BMW 501, known as the “Baroque Angel”, was an economic failure because the car with a six-cylinder engine was only affordable for a small group of buyers. With the Isetta this was enlarged and the model became a success for BMW.

In the summer of 1975, the first BMW 3 series appeared with the E21 . It was only available as a two-door sedan. The engine plate comprised units from 1.6 to 2.3 liters displacement, which covered a power range from 75 to 143 hp. As an entry-level 315, the 3 Series was still available until spring 1984.
1982–1994 2,339,251 pieces |
3 series (E30) |
The second 3-series, which appeared at the end of 1982, now offered a much greater variety of bodywork: in addition to the two-door sedan, there was also a four-door variant, a station wagon (touring) and a full convertible. Model maintenance measures were carried out in summer 1985 and autumn 1987.
1990-2000 |
3 series (E36) |
In the fall of 1990, only the four-door sedan of the third series of 3 came onto the market. There was no longer a two-door sedan, for which BMW offered a coupé as an alternative from autumn 1992. The cabriolet followed in the spring of 1993. Completely new, however, was a hatchback variant with the addition of Compact , which was available from dealers from summer 1994. To round off the range, the Touring was added at the beginning of 1995.
1998-2005 |
3 series (E46) |
Fourth generation of the 3 series. The coupé, convertible and compact versions developed slightly different from the sedan and station wagon. A facelift for the sedan and touring followed in late summer 2001, while the coupé and convertible were not overhauled until early 2003.

1972-1981 |
5 series (E12) |
First row of 5 . It appeared in the late summer of 1972 and was initially only offered as a limousine. In the course of the construction period, there were over 20 engines with a displacement between 1.8 and 3.5 l and with 90 to 218 hp four- and six-cylinder engines.
1981-1987 |
5 series (E28) |
Externally, the 5 Series, which was introduced in mid-1981, remained very similar to its predecessor, as the optically only slightly modified body was used. However, the rear of the vehicle has been completely redesigned with a higher and significantly more angular finish and larger, chrome-framed rear lights. The front of the vehicle was also a little more striking, with the wider BMW kidney grille, which was split into two for the first time, and the differently sized double headlights.
1987–1996 approx. 1,300,000 pieces |
5 series (E34) |
At the beginning only the sedan with the twelve-valve in-line six-cylinders (520i, 525i, 530i and 535i), which were already known from other series, was available. From September 1991 there was a second body variant, the Kombi Touring , which featured a previously unique double sunroof and a rear window that could be opened separately.
1995-2004 |
5 series (E39) |
Initially, this 5 Series was only available as a sedan, because a station wagon called the Touring was only presented again in March 1997. In contrast to its predecessor, no model variant with all-wheel drive was planned for the E39. With regard to the driving characteristics, they broke new ground by bringing the world's first production car (according to BMW) with a so-called lightweight chassis, the chassis components of which were largely made of aluminum. A facelift was carried out in the summer of 2000.
