The Gridi Kraftfahrbau-Gesellschaft mbH was a German automobile manufacturer.

Company history

The company was founded in Saulgau in 1922 by Messrs. Griebel and Wilhelm Diez to produce automobiles . The brand name Gridi is made up of the names of the company owners. Initially, the company was in Saulgau, later, at the instigation of Louis Goldmann, in Pforzheim . The designer was a Mr. Ortlieb from Stuttgart . The Pforzheimer Stadtchronik reports on a Mr. Eckert who also worked in the design office at Gridi before he worked for the International Motor Company in New York. One driver was Carl Koepf, and Josef Scheck was one of the coachbuilders. In 1924 the company had 20 to 25 or about 50 employees. The inflation of the time and a major fire in the body shop led to liquidation in 1924. A total of 20 to 30 vehicles are said to have been produced.

vehicles

The company manufactured small cars. The vehicle had a single - cylinder four-stroke engine with 865 cm³ displacement and 15 hp . The engine was mounted in the front of the vehicle. Instead of an ordinary gear, a friction gear was used. The vehicle also had a worm steering system. The open body offered space for two people in a row. Due to the narrow vehicle width and the small rear track width , a differential was not used.

Races

The vehicles were also used successfully in races.

At least one vehicle took part in the small car race at the Berlin AVUS in 1923.

Wilhelm Diez won the 1924 Burrenwald race, a mountain and flat race over 9000 m, from Biberach / Riß to Schammach, in the class up to 4.5 tax horsepower (1178 cm³), in a time of 7:44 minutes, average 69.82 km / h. The racing program shows the Gridi with 2.9 tax horsepower (759 cm³). There was also a class win in the Solitude race.
