Hansa-Lloyd profit participation certificate

The Hansa-Lloyd Werke AG emerged in 1914 from the merger of Hansa Automobil GmbH in Varel and the North German automobile and engines AG (NAMAG) in Bremen - Hastedt (Föhrenstraße).

Independent company

The director was the previous Hansa boss Robert Allmers (1872–1951). The engineer Sigmund Meyer , co-founder and head of NAMAG, and August Sporkhorst (1870–1940) from Hansa-Automobil GmbH were on the board .

On Sigmund Meyer's initiative, in 1919 the Hansa-Lloyd-Werke founded the “ Association of German Automobile Manufacturers ” (GDA), a cartel for the sale of cars and commercial vehicles, together with the National Automobile Society and Brennabor .

As with several other automobile manufacturers, Jakob Schapiro was a major Hansa-Lloyd shareholder and held 30% of the shares, but became insolvent in the mid-1920s . The Hansa-Lloyd factory in Varel was closed in 1930. Between 1929 and 1931, Carl F. W. Borgward and Wilhelm Tecklenborg , owners of Goliath-Werke Borgward  & Co. in Bremen, took over the majority of shares in Hansa-Lloyd-Werke.

Hansa-Lloyd and Goliath works

At the end of 1931, the Hansa-Lloyd Werke AG , the former NAMAG factory in Hastedt, merged with the neighboring Borgward & Co. to form "Hansa-Lloyd and Goliath-Werke Borgward & Tecklenborg oHG ". With its truck program, Hansa-Lloyd added Borgward's range of small commercial vehicles, while at the same time the extensive Hansa-Lloyd factory facilities at Borgward & Tecklenborg enabled the production of passenger cars. The Hansa-Lloyd brand was used by the new company for trucks until 1937. The public limited company Hansa-Lloyd was only deleted from the commercial register in 1939 .

The Hansa-Lloyd and Goliath works continued to use the name Hansa for passenger cars. The unsuccessful rear-wheel drive models Hansa 400 and 500 came onto the market in 1933 as the first models. Its predecessor was the Goliath Pioneer , whose sales figures fell rapidly after the vehicle tax was abolished in the German Reich in April 1933 . The chief designer Herbert Scarisbrick therefore had to develop the new mid-range Hansa 1100 and 1700 cars under great time pressure .

The new Hansa models were seen for the first time in spring 1934 at the 24th  International Automobile and Motorcycle Exhibition (IAMA) in Berlin . To build the new models, Borgward acquired part of the halls of the Norddeutsche Waggonfabrik in March 1934 , the Hansa 1100 went into production in July 1934 and the Hansa 1700 (with six-cylinder engine and 40 hp) in September . The models were very popular because the price was also below that of most of the competition. The 1100 initially cost 2,750  Reichsmarks (RM), the 1700 was available for 3,250 RM. Around 27,000 vehicles were sold.

“Sports convertibles ” were also produced from the models, and the “ Hansa 1700 sports car” with a body by Hebmüller , which appeared in 1936, is particularly outstanding . Thanks to the twin carburettors, the engine achieved 46 hp and 125 km / h. Because of the price of 5,000 RM, only eleven vehicles were sold. In 1937 a few prototypes of the 1500 with 40 hp and 125 km / h were developed, but they no longer went into production. The proven models 1100 and 1700 were also produced.

During the Second World War , the Hastedter plant was largely destroyed in the air raid on Bremen on October 12, 1944.
