Previous model Lloyd 400

The Lloyd Alexander was a small car produced by Lloyd Motoren Werke GmbH in Bremen, part of the Borgward Group , which came onto the market in 1957. It was the further development of the Lloyd 600 , which had been built since 1955, with significant changes compared to this model that was still being built. The biggest improvement was the rear trunk, which is now accessible from the outside; the sliding side windows were replaced by fully retractable crank windows. In contrast to the 600 with three-speed gearbox and crutch shift, the Alexander had a synchronized four-speed gearbox with steering wheel shift .

Engine and chassis

Lloyd Alexander TS

The Alexander took over the air-cooled two-cylinder four-stroke engine with a chain-driven overhead camshaft from the Lloyd 600 . The engine was a co-rotating parallel twin (that is, the pistons move in the same direction in the cylinders next to each other), had a displacement of 596 cm³ and developed 19 HP (14 kW) at 4500 rpm, maximum torque 39 Nm at 2500 / min (compression 6.6: 1). Top speed: 100 km / h, acceleration from 0 to 100 km / h approx. 60 seconds. In normal use, the car consumed almost 7 liters of regular gasoline per 100 km and was therefore a little more economical than a VW Beetle . The 25-liter tank was located under the bonnet in front of the bulkhead , next to it on the right-hand side of the vehicle, the 6 V battery. Lloyd Alexander and Alexander TS had a newly designed synchronized four-speed gearbox, while the Lloyd 600 had the unsynchronized three-speed gearbox from the Lloyd 400 built into it.

The front wheels of the front-wheel drive vehicle with telescopic shock absorbers all around were suspended from two transverse leaf springs lying one above the other; the rear axle was designed as a pendulum axle with longitudinal leaf springs. The foot brake worked hydraulically on drum brakes (Ø 200 mm, braking area 456 cm²) on all four wheels, the handbrake with cable pull on the front wheels. As was common with small cars at that time, the Lloyd had rack and pinion steering , which required 2 ¼ turns of the steering wheel with a turning circle of 10.45 m from lock to lock.

The 1958 presented Lloyd Alexander TS was recognizable by its semi-elliptical grille and had a newly developed rear axle with trailing arms (then still referred to as a trailing arm) with progressively acting coil springs, a more powerful engine with 25 hp (18.4 kW) and some improvements such as windshield washer the new asymmetrical low beam introduced in 1957 . The new rear axle, which noticeably improved the driving characteristics, was also used on the Lloyd Arabella , which came onto the market in the summer of 1959.

body

Lloyd LS 600

Like its predecessor, the Lloyd 400 , the 600 also had the additional designations LP for sedan, LC for convertible sedan , LK for panel van and LS for station wagon. In the case of the Alexander, these names were omitted and the convertible sedan was also not offered. Alexander and Alexander TS had an all-steel body in a repair-friendly shell construction (the body parts were bolted), like their predecessors, the 600 and the 400 (from October 1954). The body was supported by a central tubular frame with a closed sheet steel support. After the LP 300 , the body of which was made entirely of wood and covered with artificial leather (therefore jokingly called the "Leukoplastbomber"), the 400 series was initially also made entirely of wood in 1953, but soon came in a composite construction. H. Side parts and doors made of steel, roof as well as bonnet and trunk made of wood with artificial leather.

The front window of all Lloyd LP, LC, LK and LS was flat, the rear window of the sedans (from October 1954) curved. Until the end of the construction period in 1961, the doors were hinged at the back, which meant that the front seats were easy to access, but contradicted any safety concerns.

The Lloyd had room for four adults, but access to the rear seats was difficult and the space was cramped as the rear wheel arches restricted the seat width. In front the freedom of movement was greater; however, the steering wheel was generally felt to be too close to the driver. The trunk held 104 liters.

Lloyd had no body presses of his own; That is why the sheet metal parts were obtained from Allgaier and Karmann , revised, assembled and painted in their own factory.

Prices in comparison

176,524 units of the Lloyd LP 600 including the Alexander models were built. They were inexpensive small cars with the equipment of a full-fledged car. The purchase price of the Lloyd Alexander was DM 4,060. In comparison: a VW Standard cost DM 3,790, the export model DM 4,600. A BMW Isetta 250 cost DM 2,780 and a Goggomobil 400 cost DM 3,232. The Lloyd, however, was 3355 mm × 1410 mm × 1400 mm compared to the Isetta or the Goggomobil is significantly larger and almost reached the level of a mid-range car of the time.

All 400 and 600 Lloyd were available both as sedan (LP) and station wagon (LS).

Others

The "spur" on the bonnet, which is considered dangerous for pedestrians in an accident, was replaced on all models by a flatter part at the end of the trim strip between 1956 and 1957. Since April 1, 1959, dangerous ornaments such as hood ornaments on motor vehicles have been banned.
