The DAF 30 with the sales designation Daffodil was a Dutch small car made by DAF with a standard automatic transmission " Variomatic ". The vehicle appeared in 1961 together with the somewhat less luxurious DAF 750 . Both were the same except for the grille and equipment. They were improved versions of the first DAF from 1959, the DAF 600 , which had a smaller 590 cm³ engine, which DAF continued to offer as the cheapest model. The two-door body had the then modern tail fins .
The DAF 30 had an air-cooled two-cylinder boxer engine with 26 hp (19 kW) that drove the rear wheels via a centrifugal clutch, a reversing gear , a drive shaft and the V-belt automatic. The heavy Variomatic was installed in front of the rear axle under the back seat. Because of the reversing gear, the Daffodil could be driven backwards as fast as it was forwards. New compared to the previous DAF 600 was a modified vacuum system with an additional vacuum tank. In practice, this was reflected in a transmission ratio that remained stable with constant driving resistance, but with the accelerator pedal depressed harder. In addition, the engine revved up to the range of maximum power when the accelerator pedal was fully depressed. The acceleration from 0 to 80 km / h has therefore improved considerably from 35 to 20 seconds compared to the DAF 600, not only because of the larger engine. The daffodil did not have a differential. When cornering, the slip of the V-belt compensated for the different speeds. In 1963 the Italian designer Giovanni Michelotti revised the 600-750-30 series and designed the DAF 31 , which was now available in the equipment variants “Standaard”, “Luxe” and “Luxe Extra”. In 1965 the last Daffodil came, the DAF 32 - again as “Standaard”, “Luxe” and “Luxe Extra”. The Daffodil Series 1966/1967 was replaced by the small car DAF 33 , were added DAF 44 and DAF 55 with a new body, the 55 had to a modified suspension and a water-cooled engine of Renault.
