The DAF 77 was a prototype from DAF , which was developed as the successor to the DAF 66 under the internal name Project P900 from 1970. However, it never went into series production, as Volvo Personvagnar took over the passenger car division from DAF in 1975 in order to be represented in the small car and compact class in the future .

Development history

Since DAF needed outside capital as well as a supplier for the planned 1.4-liter four-cylinder engine for the model, exploratory talks began with other automobile manufacturers , including BMW , but all of them failed. Renault intended to further develop the 1.3-liter petrol engine that was already installed in the DAF 66 , after which Volvo took over a third of the passenger car division from DAF in early 1973. Since the end of production of the Volvo Amazon in 1970, Volvo has only had larger and more expensive models in its range with the Volvo 140 and Volvo 164 . Initially, the plan was to manufacture badge engineering models for future DAF passenger cars, so Volvo was already involved in the development phase of Project P900 . This happened in particular in the body shop and safety equipment. The ongoing financial difficulties, especially after the oil price shock in 1973, prompted DAF to completely withdraw from the production of cars.

Takeover as Volvo

Volvo took over the entire passenger car division from DAF in mid-1975, making the DAF 66 the Volvo 66 . The short of the market standing, now DAF 77 called Bus, was further developed by Volvo and 1976 Volvo 343 launched. The largest DAF, which has now mutated into one of the smallest Volvo models, was in the tradition of the DAF brand, which was also reflected in the technical similarities to the DAF 66: the Variomatic transmission on the rear axle (in transaxle design) and the engines from Renault. Compared to the DAF 77, the Volvo 343 had a redesigned interior, different rims and thicker bumpers. By 1991 the Project P900 was finally built as a Volvo and was the last model with the DAF Variomatic, which was finally available at an additional cost.
