The Austin Rover Group with the commercial vehicle division Freight Rover was split up in 1987 through the privatization of the British government under Margaret Thatcher . The trucks and small delivery vans from Freight-Rover were brought into the Leyland DAF, which was founded together with DAF , and so the Freight Rover 200-300 became the Leyland DAF 200-400 in the Commonwealth of Nations and the DAF 200-400 in continental Europe from 1989 onwards .

Leyland DAF and DAF 200-400 series 1989–1997

The Freight Rover 200-300 was initially continued to build after the establishment of Leyland DAF, the series received a new radiator grille in 1989 with the Leyland DAF or DAF badge. A PSA XUD 1.9 liter diesel engine replaced the MDI engine and the 300 became the 400. Air suspension was now available as an option.

In 1993 Leyland-DAF went bankrupt. From the bankruptcy estate, the newly founded LDV LTD, which continued to build the 200-400 series until 1997 , emerged alongside Leyland Trucks LTD . In 1997 the model series was modernized and replaced by the LDV Pilot and LDV Convoy .
