The DAF Losser was the first vehicle from the Dutch manufacturer DAF . DAF previously produced trailers for trucks, among other things. The Losser, developed in 1938, was developed to load the containers in which goods were stowed from a railroad chassis onto a truck and vice versa.

history

At that time, goods were reloaded from the railroad car to other means of transport and vice versa. The system invented by DAF with standard containers with a payload of up to 5 tonnes, which were reloaded from the railway chassis to a truck with the Losser, solved the problem of railway companies with regard to door-to-door delivery of goods quickly. The practical solution saved the working time of those who had to unload the goods in or from the railway wagons, while a container could now be loaded or unloaded directly in the companies.

After a decade of testing and use by the Dutch railway company, the system was also acquired by Belgian and Swiss railways and Deutsche Bahn . Today the system is standard in international rail traffic and is also used in a similar way in shipping . The success later encouraged DAF to start building motorized commercial vehicles .
