DAF YA-328
The DAF YA-318 / YA-328 was a medium-duty military truck that DAF produced for the Dutch army between 1952 and 1958. The DAF YA 4440/4442 was built as a successor in the 1980s .
Model history
In the 1950s consisted fleet of the Royal Dutch Army mainly of vehicles, the Allies of World War II . The maintenance and supply of spare parts for the original British and American vehicles that were no longer in production became increasingly a logistical problem and a renovation was therefore necessary. On December 20, 1951, DAF received its first government contract for 175 million guilders . This money was part of the Marshall Plan to rebuild Europe . In total, the orders between 1951 and 1956 amounted to 393,583,005 guilders for the delivery of three different types of military trucks, in addition to the YA-328, the DAF YA-126 and the DAF YA-314/324 . The prototype and the pre-production model for the YA-328 series were named DAF YA 318. There were two prototypes and 298 pre-production models.
Type designation of series models
The series was nicknamed " Big Daf" by the armed forces because of the characteristic engine noise and the heavy and imposing appearance. The official type designation was:
- Y = military vehicle
- A = general
- 3 = capacity in tons
- 1 or 2 = series
- 8 = the number of wheels.
Differences between prototype / pre-series model and series
The main difference was the engine, a 4-liter gasoline engine in the 318 and a 5-liter gasoline engine in the 328, both from Hercules . In addition, the manual transmission of the pre-series 318 only had four instead of five gears.
Model variants series version
Of the YA-328, 4510 pieces were produced between 1952 and 1958 in four variants:
- Artillery tugs : 1080 pieces
- Truck with winch: 699 pieces
- Truck without winch: 2731 units
- Crash tender, airport fire engine : number unknown
The vehicles had no heating . In order to heat the driver's cab , the bonnet placed between the seats had to be opened so that the engine heat, but also noise and oil fumes, spread. In the summer, on the other hand, it was possible to drive without doors and without a roof. The value of a vehicle was 45,000 guilders. This price was written on the dashboard, probably to encourage drivers to take care of the material.
