DAF YA 616

The DAF YA-616 and DAF YA-626 were heavy military trucks that DAF produced for the Dutch army from 1959 to 1969.

Model history

In the 1950s, the fleet of the Royal Dutch Army consisted mainly of Allied vehicles from World War II . The maintenance and supply of spare parts for the original British and American vehicles that were no longer in production became increasingly a logistical problem and a renovation was therefore necessary. For the artillery that used until then were artillery tractor through the newly introduced DAF YA-328 replaces. The M4 artillery tractor and a 6-ton Mack truck with all-wheel drive were still in use for medium and heavy artillery . The army wanted to replace these types and DAF and Van Twist were interested in production. Both were commissioned to develop a prototype .

Both prototypes were delivered to the army in September 1955 and tested both domestically and abroad. Both vehicles initially had defects, but DAF was able to remedy these with greater flexibility. In 1958 DAF received the order to supply 140 DAF YA-616s as artillery tractors and 104 as tipper vehicles .

The 616 was known for its robust construction and high pulling power, but also notorious for its high fuel consumption; 1 liter of petrol per kilometer was no exception. The price of a vehicle was 140,000 guilders . This price was written on the dashboard, probably to encourage drivers to take care of the material.

Type designation

The official name was established in the following way;

  • Y = military vehicle
  • A = general,
  • B = armored recovery vehicle, tow truck
  • F = (fuel) tanker,
  • K = tipper,
  • T = tractor ( tractor unit or towing vehicle for trailer)
  • 6 = load in tons,
  • 1 or 2 = series 1. or 2.
  • 6 = The number of driven axes

Versions

The big advantage of the construction was that the chassis could be used for a variety of different models:

DAF YF-616

YA-616

  • A stands for General and was mainly used as an artillery tractor with a rear tandem axle and equipped with a winch and a capacity of 9000 kg.

YA 616 VL

In the late 1960s, the demand came after a 6-ton truck for the transportation of 20-foot containers was the YA why 616 VL for this purpose developed based on the standard-YA-616- pickup truck with removable tarpaulin and a rear tandem axle.

YT-616

  • T stood for the tractor unit, which, coupled with a trailer with 10 or 25 tons payload, was intended for the transport of light tanks and was equipped with a cable winch with a pulling force of 9,000 kg. Given the high pressure, the YT had a rim size of 7.50 × 20 and a tire size of 11.00 × 20.

YF-616

Tank truck for difficult terrain with a rim size of 7.50 × 20 and a tire size of 11.00 × 20 as well as a rear tandem axle.

DAF YB 626

YK-616

Tipper vehicle with a rim size of 7.50 × 20 and a tire size of 11.00 × 20 as well as a rear tandem axle.

YB-616

Recovery vehicle with two winches. Front pulling force 9,000 kg and rear 20,000 kg, with a rim size of 7.50 × 20 and a tire size of 11.00 × 20.

YB 626

A YB 616 equipped with a heavier front axle and 10.00 × 20 tires and a rear tandem axle. In the back the tire size was 14.00 × 20.

Production numbers and type numbers

In times of the Cold War , DAF and the Royal Army always kept very secretive when announcing the number of units. At that time, these were not always given in chronological order. The later announced total production of the 616/626 series is 1,270 units.
