DAF YA-314/324
The DAF YA-314 / YA 324 was a military truck that DAF produced for the Dutch army from 1955 to 1965 in 4406 copies. In the 1980s the model range was replaced by the DAF YA 4440/4442 .
Model history
In the 1950s consisted fleet of the Royal Dutch Army mainly of vehicles, the Allies of World War II . The maintenance and supply of spare parts for the original British and American vehicles, which were no longer in production, became increasingly a logistical problem and an upgrade was therefore necessary. On December 20, 1951, DAF received its first government contract for 175 million guilders . This money was a measure of the Marshall Plan to Rebuild Europe . In total, the orders between 1951 and 1956 amounted to 393,583,005 guilders for the delivery of three different types of military trucks, in addition to the YA-314, the DAF YA-328 and the DAF YA-126 .
The YA-314 truck had no power steering or heating . In order to warm up the driver's cab , the hood placed between the seats had to be opened so that the engine heat, but also noise and oil fumes, could spread. The value of a vehicle was 25,000 guilders. This price was written on the dashboard, probably to encourage drivers to take care of the material.
Type designation
The type designations YA, YK, YF-314/324 are composed in the following way:
- Y = military vehicle
- A = general,
- F = (fuel) tank truck ,
- K = tipper vehicle ,
- 3 = payload in tons,
- 1 or 2 = series 1. or 2.
- 4 = number of wheels
The series 1 DAF YA-314 was built from 1955 to 1960 and the second series YA-324 from 1961 to 1965. The chassis of the YA-324 was slightly expanded, stronger leaf springs were installed on the rear axle together with modified shock absorbers at the front and rear. In addition, the YA-324 not only had the speedometer but also the level indicators next to the speedometer, and in addition to the tarpaulin structure , it was now also available with a closed metal structure instead of a steel structure.
Model variants
- General service, tarpaulin construction for the transport of soldiers or goods
- Toolset, box body with office equipment

Probably because of the higher usability, the majority of the specimens ended up in foreign armies. Many YA 314s have been scrapped and their front and rear axles have been used in container construction. In the Dutch army, the DAF YA 4440/4442 became the successor model.
