The forward control truck Leyland Constructor was the second model launched in 1981 by the British Leyland Motor Corporation based on the T45 project . The construction vehicle was mainly built as a tipper vehicle and replaced the Leyland Bison and Leyland Buffalo model series . After the merger of Leyland Motors and DAF (Automobile) to Leyland DAF , the Leyland Constructor was marketed as Leyland DAF 60 in the United Kingdom from 1990 and as DAF 60 in continental Europe . The successor DAF 85 followed in 1994 .

Leyland Constructor 1981-1990

Essentially, the Constructor was available as a construction vehicle with the drive formula 6x2,6x4, 8x2, 8x4 and 8x8. However, it was also available for transporting goods with a box body or as a tractor unit . All versions had a payload between 10 and 30 tons. As with the Leyland Roadtrain with the T45 driver's cab in a normal version or as a double cab with sleeping facilities and optionally with a high roof. Basically with the same equipment of the cabin, but here the cabin floor was equipped with a thickly padded rubber layer instead of a carpet and optionally there were vinyl seat covers instead of fabric covers. From its predecessors Leyland Bison & Buffalo, the Constructor took over the chassis with the exception of the front section of the ladder frame due to the connections with the new T45 cabin. The braking system has also been adopted, which was only introduced in the previous years, but improved again. The tandem rear-drive axles used with hub reduction gears were basically also from the predecessors, but were adapted due to the higher requirements and performance possibilities of the engines. This resulted in damage to the drive shafts in the first years of construction under particularly high loads, and an inadequately designed radiator guard on the 6x version also led to problems. Leyland quickly eliminated these sources of error and changed the design.

The revolutionary but initially unreliable direct injection diesel engine Leyland 500 OHC was also originally installed in the Leyland Bison . After BLMC modernized it to the Leyland 0-680 and installed it as the L11 & TL11 in the Bison, the Bison, which is outdated in terms of design and comfort, like the other models equipped with the engine family, also offered technical reliability. Therefore it was not surprising that the relatively new TL11 6-cylinder diesel engine, which had high torque, was now taken over by the Constructor with 181 hp or 209 hp. For the 8x variant there was also a Rolls-Royce with 220 HP or the Gardner 6LXC-T with a 230 HP diesel engine. The power transmission took place with the Eaton 400 manual transmission. For more difficult tasks there was a Fuller 9-speed gearbox for the 6x and a Spicer 10-speed gearbox for the 8x . In 1985 the engine range was revised. The Leyland TL11 now offered 260 PS and the 8x version could also be ordered with a Perkins Engines or Cummins Engine 300 PS diesel engine. This made the Constructor 30:30 the most powerful tipper vehicle worldwide for some time. In order to cope with the additional performance and to reduce production costs, the double rear axles , which were still based on an Albion construction, have now been replaced by those supplied by Eaton at 30:30.

Leyland-DAF 60 / DAF 60 1990-1993

With the merger to Leyland DAF , the Constructor was marketed as Leyland DAF 60 in the UK and DAF 60 in continental Europe during 1990 . Now there was only the DAF ATi 11.6 liter diesel engine with 300 or 330 hp, which itself was a further development of the Leyland 0-680 with an Eaton 12-speed split gearbox. The series was produced until the end of 1993 and replaced by the DAF 85 from 1994 .
