Even before the acquisition of the Standard Motor Company by Leyland Motors the development of began Leyland 2-ton truck as a supplement for commercial vehicles Leyland downwards. It had a payload of 2000 kg.

It was a pickup truck in cab-over design with built-in between driver and passenger seat motor whose force is transmitted to the rear axle by means of cardan shaft. The engine was a Massey Ferguson OE138-2260 cm³ diesel engine with 44 kW / 60 PS, which was also installed in the Ferguson tractors. With a short or long wheelbase, the 2-ton truck was available as a panel van , minibus , flatbed truck , ambulance , ambulance and chassis for bodies. The short version had a wheelbase of 2850 mm and was 3048 mm long, the long version had a wheelbase of 3430 mm and a length of 3920 mm.

If the standard box van was available ex works with 9.3 m³ or 11.3 m³ load volume, depending on the wheelbase, various body solutions were also implemented by body manufacturers up to 28 m³ load volume. Versions with a smaller wheelbase for a lower payload and load volume at a lower price were not implemented because Leyland Motors took over the Standard Motor Company in the same year and was thus able to offer the Standard Atlas as the Leyland 15/20 .

When Leyland Motors merged with the British Motor Corporation to form the British Leyland Motor Corporation in 1968 , production of the Leyland 2-tonner and the Leyland 15/20 was discontinued to avoid additional competition to the BMC J4 , BMC 250 JU and the newly designed BMC 350 EA , which replaced the 2-ton truck.
