The Leyland Hippo was a military truck with a ten ton payload and two rear drive axles (6 × 4 drive formula ) that Leyland Motors produced for the British Army. The Hippo was based on a pre-war truck model, the military version of which was only produced in 1944. The strength of the Hippo was its cross-country mobility with a high payload of up to ten tons. The engine was placed under the cab, creating a large, flat cargo space at the rear. This arrangement of the engine that is common today was unusual at the time. The first version Mk I had an open cab that could be closed with a tarpaulin. The Mk II version came with a fully enclosed steel cab, in addition to a variety of options for military use, such as a darkroom for developing photos. The Leyland Hippo was partially used by the British Army until the 1980s.
