history

prehistory

Massey-Ferguson's roots go back to 1847. It was then that Daniel Massey founded the Massey Manufacturing Company in Newcastle , Ontario . In 1891, the merged Massey Manufacturing Company with the founded by Alanson Harris Company A. Harris and Son Implement to Massey-Harris Company Limited .

Harry Ferguson invented shortly before the outbreak of the Second World War, the three-point linkage . He first worked with David Brown , then with Henry Ford . However, as a result of patent disputes with the Ford Motor Company , he separated from Ford in 1947 and from then on worked with Sir John Black's Standard Motor Company , whose gasoline engines were installed in Ferguson tractors from 1948 and diesel engines from 1951 (before that, they were engines from Continental Motors Company ).

fusion

In 1953 the Canadian Massey-Harris Company merged with the British Harry Ferguson Limited . Toronto became the headquarters of the new company. After the merger, the Massey-Harris Tractor Plant in Racine was closed and production moved to the Ferguson Park plant in Detroit. The new company was initially called Massey-Harris-Ferguson but was eventually renamed the Massey Ferguson Company in 1958. This year the logo, consisting of the three triangles, was used for the first time. With the use of the new emblem on the tractors, the color scheme was also changed to red and silver. In 1954 Harry Ferguson left the company to build racing cars with Ferguson Research .

In the same year, the Australian company HV McKay Massey Harris Pty Ltd was taken over, which was created in 1930 from the agricultural machinery company of Hugh Victor McKay and the Australian subsidiary of Massey-Harris.

In 1956, long-time managing director James S. Duncan had to resign.

Introduced in 1958, the MF 65 was the first Massey Ferguson tractor to use a Perkins engine.

Since Massey Ferguson only had tractors in the lower and medium power range on offer, but more powerful tractors were also in demand in Canada and the USA, the MF 97 model was brought onto the market in 1958, which was based on the GBD from Minneapolis-Moline . 1959 followed with the MF 98, which was based on the Super 99GM of the Oliver Corporation , another model in this performance range.

In April 1959, Massey Ferguson took over the engine manufacturer Perkins Engines . In August of that year, the Standard Motor Company , which had been manufacturing Ferguson tractors under license since 1946, with the Banner Lane plant near Coventry and the Saint-Denis plant in Standard in a joint venture with Hotchkiss et al Cie also made tractors.

In 1960 a new plant was opened in Beauvais , France .

Since 1961, TAFE (Tractors and Farm Equipment Limited) in India has manufactured Massey Ferguson tractors under license, which are also sold under the Massey Ferguson brand name . From 1962, a power shift transmission was offered as an option for various models with the Multipower transmission .

1973 Eicher was completely taken over. From now on tractors were manufactured at Eicher, which were largely based on models from Massey Ferguson. When Massey Ferguson got into economic difficulties in the 1980s, the stake in Eicher was sold to Eicher Goodearth in 1982 .

In 1974, the German construction machinery manufacturer Hanomag was taken over, but it was sold back to IBH Holding in 1980 . Also in 1974, the Polish tractor manufacturer Ursus SA signed a license agreement with Massey Ferguson to manufacture their tractors in Poland.

This collaboration continued until 1996 when AGCO took over the agricultural machinery division from Iochpe-Maxion.

In 1985 the combine harvester division of the insolvent competitor White Farm Equipment was taken over .

As part of Varity

In 1986 the American automotive supplier Dayton Walther was bought and in the same year the company was renamed Varity , with the agricultural machinery division retaining the name Massey Ferguson . Also in 1986, the Sunshine plant in Australia was closed. By means of an out management buy- the area for construction equipment (was Industrial ) than in 1992 Fermec outsourced.

In 1988, the Massey Combines division , which had been founded in 1985 and consisted of the ailing large tractors and combine harvesters, went bankrupt. This led to the closure of the combine harvester plant in Brantford on March 4, 1988. The production of large tractors was taken over by McConnell, who continued to manufacture these tractors for Massey Ferguson.

In 1989, Varity took over the automotive supplier Kelsey-Hayes from the Fruehauf Corporation .
