The Fruehauf Corporation was a traditional trailer manufacturer from Indianapolis .

history

The blacksmith and coach builder August Charles Fruehauf (1868–1930), who originally worked in Detroit, built a trailer for transporting boats in 1914 on behalf of a customer. His client then wanted a further trailer from Fruehauf for transporting logs. After its completion, Fruehauf finally called this second trailer " semi-trailer " and in 1918 expanded the product line. After renaming his company to Fruehauf Trailer Company , he specialized completely in the production of semi-trailers .

In 1963 the company was renamed and modernized. The steady expansion culminated in 1973 with the takeover of the automotive supplier Kelsey-Hayes , which was sold to Varity in 1989 . In 1997 the Fruehauf Corporation went bankrupt and was sold to Wabash National . As a result, production in the USA was completely stopped. The subsidiaries founded abroad remained exempt from liquidation, but some of them were sold in the following years. In 2015, for example , the Polish commercial vehicle manufacturer Wielton took over the French subsidiary Fruehauf SAS .
