Wielton is a Polish manufacturer of semi-trailers, trailers and bodies for use in road haulage and agriculture . The company is one of the ten largest manufacturers of non-motorized commercial vehicles worldwide and ranks third among its competitors in Europe , where it is the market leader in numerous countries . The brands of the same name include Fruehauf , Langendorf and Viberti .
history
Entrepreneurial beginnings
In 1989, in the course of the political upheaval in Poland, there was rapid liberalization of the Polish economy . The positive development of industry and the service sector created an enormous demand for non-motorized commercial vehicles in standardized dimensions. As a result, in 1991 the two engineers Ryszard Prozner and Krzysztof Tylkowski began to resell used trailers on the domestic market after extensive restoration and conversion work, through their Protyl bodywork workshop, which was founded in 1987 .
In 1996, the company began designing its own trailers for the first time. In the same year, production was converted into an independent company with limited liability under the current brand , and the product range was gradually expanded to include various trailers and bodies. After the partial sale of the company to the two entrepreneur brothers Paweł and Mariusz Szataniak, the founders of the Polish ready- meal manufacturer Pamapol , the company was renamed a joint stock company in 2006 . Wielton has been listed on the Warsaw Stock Exchange since 2007 .
Expansion and global expansion
Since converting to a public limited company, Wielton has made extensive investments and both automated and modernized production. The product range has been upgraded to around 70 different types of commercial vehicles that meet the safety standards applicable in the European Union . In addition, a close-knit sales and service network has been set up throughout Europe and Central Asia , which is operated through its own subsidiaries and cooperating contractual partners. Wielton works exclusively with well-known suppliers such as Alcoa , Binotto , BPW , Hyva , Knorr , Marcolin , SAF , SSAB or Wabco . In connection with fixed tipping bridges , the company also usually works with motor vehicle manufacturers such as Daimler , MAN , Scania and Volvo and for a while manufactured chassis for competitors such as Acerbi or Wecon .
In the production plant at the company's headquarters in Wieluń , Poland , Wielton employs over 1,200 people who work in shifts to produce non-motorized commercial vehicles for markets in 35 countries. Is attached to it since 2016 a project funded by the European Union and Europe so far only from competitors Schmitz Cargobull driven development and diagnostic center with hydro-pulse test and time-lapse load station. In 2012, an additional assembly plant was opened in Sheremetyevo, Russia , from which the markets of the Commonwealth of Independent States are supplied.
Due to the civil war in eastern Ukraine and the associated trade complications, the company began in 2014 to position itself more strongly on the Western European markets. This was followed in 2015 by the takeover of the Italian competitor Italiana Rimorchi along with the three previously independent subsidiaries Cardi , Merker and Viberti as well as the assembly plant in Pescara . In the same year the takeover of the traditional French market leader Fruehauf and the production plant in Auxerre was completed. While around 7,500 commercial vehicles were sold before the takeover of both competitors in 2015, more than 12,000 units were sold in the following year, making Wielton one of the ten largest manufacturers in the world. In 2017, after six months of negotiations , Wielton took over eighty percent of its German competitor Langendorf, including its subsidiaries and production facilities in Waltrop . Former investor Klaus Strautmann will retain twenty percent of the company, which will gradually be transferred to Wielton by 2022 . In September 2018, Wielton bought the British company Lawrence David . The takeover enables Wielton to increase its annual sales to 20,000 vehicles. Since Lawrence David also manufactures small delivery vans , Wielton gains access to this group of vehicles for the first time, which it also wants to market in Europe.
After Wielton was able to successfully sell commercial vehicles in Gambia and Burkina Faso via the service provider Trans-Serv since 2014 , it is planning to significantly expand its activities in West Africa . In 2017, the subsidiary Wielton Africa was started in the Ivory Coast with an assembly plant in Abidjan , which involves investments in the millions. The trailers manufactured at the location are to be sold primarily in the individual member countries of the West African Economic and Monetary Union . Overall, Wielton plans to double its annual production to around 25,000 units by 2020. For this purpose, not only the cathodic dip painting is to be expanded at the company's headquarters in Wieluń , but a second assembly plant is also to be built in Poland in the coming years, for which a suitable location is currently being sought. In addition to its position as the Polish market leader, ahead of domestic competitors such as Feber , Pronar or Zasław , Wielton is particularly well represented in the Visegrad region , the Balkans and the Baltic States . Presence in German-speaking countries
The Wielton brand was first introduced in Germany in 2005 on the initiative of the service provider Trans-Serv as the sole general agent, who in 2014 also expanded its activities to Austria and the German-speaking region of Belgium and was responsible for all services from purchase advice to product maintenance. On the German market, in addition to sales with annual growth rates in the double-digit range, the establishment of a comprehensive service network was achieved. The focus of trading activities was in particular on trailer trucks and tipper trailers . In the latter product segment, due to the number of registrations it achieved in 2015, Wielton was temporarily the European market leader ahead of competitors such as Schmitz Cargobull , Schwarzmüller or Fliegl . In 2016, Trans-Serv set up an official base for Wielton in Weilerswist with an exhibition area, assembly hall, workshop and test bench, from where it also looked after customers in Liechtenstein , Luxembourg and Switzerland .
With the acquisition of the German competitor Langendorf , whose portfolio includes tipper trailers and in particular low loaders and inloaders , the nationwide distribution of the road product range in 2018 was transferred to the Waltrop- based company. It markets the trailers and bodies from Wielton under its own Langendorf Smart label . The distribution of the agricultural product range , which is advertised under the independent Wielton Agro brand and includes bale wagons , three-way tippers or round trough trailers , continues to be carried out by Trans-Serv in Weilerswist.

The company name Wielton is derived from the Polish words for a lot (Polish wiele ) and tons (Polish tony ), with a sound allusion to the company's headquarters in Wieluń and the camel used in the logo (Polish wielbłąd ). In German-speaking countries, the company name is occasionally pronounced, contrary to the Polish sound entgegenvj alsltɔn, with a closed and a suppressed vowel as ˈviltn̩ .
Between 2010 and 2011, the company acted as the main sponsor of the KS Siatkarz Wieluń team, which played in the top Polish volleyball league , and at times also sponsored the football clubs WKS Wieluń and SSV Weilerswist 1924 . Since 2015, Wielton has been supporting the polytechnic universities in Warsaw , Łódź and Gliwice in the development of goods transport systems and the establishment of corresponding start-ups .
