DAF 66 station wagon

The DAF 66 was a lower middle class car from the Dutch manufacturer DAF .

history

The successor to the DAF 55 designed by Giovanni Michelotti came onto the market in October 1972. In addition to the sedan, it was also available as a station wagon and coupé.

It was distinguished from its predecessor by a new front design and a De-Dion axle instead of a swing axle as the rear axle. The Variomatic transmission was retained. The DAF 66 had a 1100 cc Renault engine and reached a top speed of 135 km / h.

It was the last car model to appear as a DAF, since Volvo Personvagnar took over the car division in 1975. From October 1975 to December 1979 the model continued to be produced as the Volvo 66 .

Like the DAF 55 before it, the DAF 66 was also available as a sports coupé. From October 1972 to September 1973 it was called the DAF 66 Marathon , after which it was sold until August 1975 as the DAF 66 Marathon 1300 with a 1289 cm³ engine and a top speed of 145 km / h. This motorization can also be found in the DAF 66 Super Sport Marathon 1300 , which was offered for a short time and whose most striking feature are round double headlights.

Based on the DAF-66, a military vehicle was developed, the DAF YA 66, a small pickup . A total of 1201 copies were built.

A special feature of the vehicles with DAF Variomatic is that they can drive backwards as fast as they can forwards. In the Netherlands, special reverse car races were held with these cars.
