Lloyd LT 500 and Lloyd LT 600 were small vans from Lloyd Motoren Werke GmbH in Bremen, part of the Borgward Group . They were built from November 1952 to 1961 as panel vans and large-capacity cars (six-seaters), in 1952/53 also as high-platform trucks and from November 1956 as " pick-ups " or low-platform vehicles. In the book Transporter der Wirtschaftswunderzeit , the Lloyd LT is referred to as “Germany's Ur- Van ”.

engine and gears

The vehicle was front-wheel drive and had a fan-cooled engine. Until 1955 it was called Lloyd LT 500 and had a two-cylinder two- stroke engine with 386 cm³ displacement and an output of 13  HP (9.6 kW) at 3750 / min, from September 1955 as Lloyd LT 600 a two-cylinder four-stroke engine with 596 cm³ displacement and 19 HP (14 kW) at 4500 rpm, whose chain-driven overhead camshaft operated the V-shaped opposite valves via rocker arms. The fuel consumption was given as 5.7 and 6.0 l / 100 km . The tank held 31 liters. In a test, the LT 500 is said to have reached a top speed of 60 km / h when fully loaded. When fully loaded, the vehicle was underpowered with a weight ratio of 95 kg per horsepower. The LT 600 was up to 80 km / h fast (according to another source up to 85 km / h).

The two-cylinder engine ( parallel twin ) and the gearbox were installed side by side in front of the front axle. The crankshaft and transmission input shaft were in alignment. The first version of the LT had an unsynchronized sliding gear with three gears and crutch shift under the steering wheel, from July 1957 there was a fully synchronized four-speed gearbox.

Chassis and body

The Lloyd LT had a central tubular frame with a timber frame structure. This construction was covered with plywood up to the front of the car; It was not until mid-1954 that sheet steel flanks existed, and from July 1957 all-steel planking. The body thus constructed acted as a resonance body for the engine noises. The car was spartan, had rear-hinged doors with sliding instead of cranked windows, which only allowed inadequate ventilation. Ventilation and ventilation could be improved from 1956 onwards with a folding sunroof available for an additional charge of 275 DM . The heating was inadequate. The dashboard made of pressed wood with wood grain, speedometer and large storage compartment exuded a certain comfort . Journalists are said to have been enthusiastic about the ease with which the seats of the large-capacity car could be removed in order to convert it into a van.

The LT box van was 3520 mm long, 1515 mm wide and 1620 mm high; Wheelbase 2350 mm, track width 1200 mm. From November 1956, the LT was also offered as a long version with a wheelbase extended to 2850 mm and an overall length of the vehicle of 4050 mm. In 1959, Lloyd developed camping equipment primarily for export to the USA, which, according to advertising, turned the LT into a multi-purpose vehicle: “An economical utility vehicle on workdays, a cozy caravan on vacation.” A folding table, a cupboard and a bed for three adults were offered .

The payload of the first LT 500 was 500 kilograms, with an empty weight of 597 kilograms. 540 kilograms of payload was the 700 kilogram LT-600 panel van with an extended wheelbase.

Like the sedan, the Lloyd LT had independent wheel suspension, at the front on two transverse leaf springs lying one above the other, and a pendulum axle with longitudinal leaf springs at the rear . The brakes of the first vehicles were operated mechanically with a cable, in March 1953 this operation was replaced by a hydraulic brake system from ATE.

Production numbers

During the entire construction period up to the bankruptcy of Borgward in 1961, 9900 Lloyd LT 500 and 14,768 LT 600 were built, mostly as large-capacity cars. Thanks to its low price, sales figures were relatively high in the first few years. In 1953 the LT panel van cost 4475 DM, the six-seater 4675 DM; the tax was 72 DM and the insurance 90 DM per year. The Goliath GV 800 with only slightly higher engine power cost 5425 DM as a flatbed truck and 6425 DM with a sheet steel case. Despite the low price and despite careful model maintenance, sales in 1960 fell to 227 units compared to 3200 in the previous year.
